More than just money - (USA)
announced in PEI a few weeks ago. To start with, Sasktel is owned by the province. As such, funding for this program represents a strategic investment by its shareholder. Also, Sasktel is following a more rational approach to technology selection, recognizing that a DSL solution does not fit everywhere. Sasktel is using fixed wireless and satellite to get to customers beyond the economic reach of DSL. It was interesting to see mobile infrastructure in the announcement - adding 50 new digital

Five innnovations that will change your life (say IBM) - (USA)
IBM has created a list of five innovations that will change the way we all live over the next five years. These fall into five areas: Energy saving solar technology will be built into asphalt, paint and windows Ever wonder how much energy could be created by having solar technology embedded in sidewalks, driveways, siding, paint, rooftops, and windows? In the next five years, solar energy will be an affordable option. Until now, the materials and the process of producing solar cells to convert i

OSI - Social media in closed societies - (USA)
My friend and colleague Evgeny Morozov is spending a year as an Open Society Institute fellow, working through some of his ideas about cybernationalism and cyberwarfare, and organizing events to discuss the future of the Internet at OSI. I was lucky enough to be included in the first of these events, a presentation by Columbia University and Berkman Center researcher John Kelly and a panel discussion on the role of the blogosphere in closed societies. Good fun, though a 9am event after a long n

Fighting Cyber Racism - (USA)
In Cyber Racism , I examine the many ways racism is being translated into the digital era from the print-only-era of newsletters (such as those I explored in my earlier book, White Lies ). I also spend some of the new book exploring ways of fighting cyber racism (see Chapter 9). There is a recent example that illustrates both the pernicious threat of cyber racism and an effective strategy for combating it. TED | Talks | Jeff Han: Unveiling the genius of multi-touch interface design (video) - (USA)
TED Talks In this demo, Jeff Han shows off (for the first time publicly) a high-resolution multi-touch computer screen that may herald the end of the point-and-click mouse. The demo, which drew spontaneous applause and audible gasps from the audience, begins with a simple lava lamp, then turns into a virtual photo-editing tabletop, where Han flicks photos across the screen as if they were paper snapshots. (The Apple iPhone, to be released a year later, also does multi-touch -- but only with two fingers.) NEW: Download this talk in full SD resolution >>

Speech Recognition Is Cool - (USA)
I can't believe that I had a speech recognition software in my computer. I was just looking around in my computer for a way to activate my microphone and I found out that Windows Vista actually had a voice recognition program, how cool is that?! This neat little software can transform my words into text and can understand my commands and going through Windows without the help of a mouse and keyboard was easy. So now, all I have to do is sit back and relax and just tell the computer what to do.
