In Depth: Celebrating 20 years of the World Wide Web - (USA)
Twenty years ago, in a research establishment in the Swiss Alps, a British-born computer scientist dreamt up a new way for academics to share information around the globe. Little did he realise that his invention would break out from the confines of academia and give birth to the world wide web. Two decades on, there are over 200 million websites and over one trillion unique URLs. An astounding 1.6 billion people use the web worldwide, and here in the UK the figure stands at over 70 per cent o

Old meets new: early version of Hotmail displayed in Safari 3 Ever since the dawn of human existence, it has been an instinct of man to try to find ways to reach out and to be able to be heard. Speech and language proved to be the most important tools of the ancient human. Humankind has used these tools to survive and to exchange thoughts; whi

UseNet Service UseNet.com Loses Copyright Infringement Case - (USA)
While a few NZB sites have been targeted before, this may be the first time a service that offers UseNet access has been dealt with a blow. In court, UseNet.com has lost their case against the RIAA. The case has been going on since 2007. “While others claim to have huge download limits,” UseNet.com says , “we deliver unheard of download limits and incredible access to two huge geographically diverse server farms. But huge download limits are of no use if you can not get the material you are

Cluetrain at Ten - a conversation at Berkman - (USA)
Ten years ago, when the internet was young and innocent, four provocateurs posted their manifesto, The Cluetrain Manifesto . It was snarky, it was smart, it sold well, and it influenced a lot of thinking. It’s ten years old now, and it’s worth asking how it aged. So Jonathan Zittrain is questioning David Weinberger and Doc Searls about their baby, in front of a star-studded group at Harvard Law School. This should be fun. (Star-studded? Let me put it this way - Dan Bricklin, the crea

Unspecified but Painfully Frustrating Error - (USA)
In recent months I have encountered a particularly troublesome error. It occurs in Excel 2003 and 2007 (and perhaps in earlier versions, but I don’t recall any such cases). The error is heralded by an unusually unhelpful error message, even my Microsoft’s standards: Microsoft Visual Basic - System Error &H80004005 (-2147467259). Unspecified error. Pardon my French, but WTF? To rub salt into the wound, this is followed up with an Out of Memory error: Sometimes these occ

RIP Laptop - (USA)
My Dell Inspiron 6000 died this yesterday morning. I woke up just in time to watch the display fade to black. Everything else works; I hooked it up to a monitor and am using it right now, but its days a portable are over. I back up all the important stuff regularly, but I made a current backup this morning, so that, when I get a new machine, I can import my configuration–mail, newsgroups, preferences, and the like–directly into my /home folder without missing a beat. Use of “e-learning” @ CQU up to 1996 (or so) - (USA)
The following is the next completed (to a rough first draft stage) section of chapter 4 of my thesis. It follows on from a post from yesterday that started defining the problem being faced. This section completes the definition of this problem by giving a broad summary of the use of “e-learning” at CQU up until 1996. Apologies to all those folk at CQU whose work I have not referenced. If you are such a person, please let me know what I’ve missed and I’ll add your work in. You should be able

Inside the Head of a Digital Pirate - (USA)
What goes on in the head of a digital pirate who is hauled into court? A recent case in New York gives us a pretty good idea. Arista Records LLC v. Usenet.com, Inc., 2009 WL 1873589 (S.D.N.Y. June 30, 2009). All images of Johnny Depp aside, tis not a pretty sight. Arrrr.  Mateys … Here’s what we do. We hide the treasure and destroy the evidence. No nay they’ll ne’er be able to convict us then. The land lubber lawyers and scurvey dog judges are too lily-livered to stop us. Aye. We gentlemen o’ fo

This Day in Geek History: June 18 - (USA)
Today, June 18, is Phi Day! Like Pi, Phi , also known as the Golden Ration, is an irrational number, equal to approximately 1.61803398874989484820458683436564. Phi is used a great deal in astronomy, but it’s found everywhere you look here on Earth, from architecture to shells and even the human body. Most importantly, it’s found in the proportions in the Greeks’ famous golden rectangle , and it’s derivable by many proofs, including the famous Fibonacci Sequence . 1858 Charles Darwin

Cool Command Line Apps for GNU/Linux and other Unix Systems - (USA)
Even though I am a strong advocate of learning as much as you can about using the command line, I admit I like my GUI a lot (and Compiz of course ). The CLI can be really useful for repairing your system or just doing some task that takes far more clicks in the graphical interface. For instance, in Debian it is much easier to open the console and write apt-get install abiword than to wait for Synaptic to load, search for Abiword, click the check-box, confirm the install and close the front end
