Latest Technological Inventions – Futuristic Inventions Revealed - (USA)
The electronics revolution shows no signs of slowing down. When I was a youngster we had dial telephones, AM radio, and black & white TV with a tall antenna on the roof. We did not have microwave ovens, cell phones, computers, FM radio, or GPS systems and there were no satellites. Well hang onto your hats, because the revolution has just begun… X-ray vision is already here… sort of. Knowing that radio waves can pass through solid materials, in 2006, engineers at Cambridge Consultant

CompTIA Retraining Schemes Uncovered - (USA)
by Jason Kendall The CompTIA A+ course comprises of 4 specialised sectors - you need to pass exams in 2 different areas to be A+ competent. This is why, many training establishments only offer two of the four in the syllabus. To us, this is too much of a compromise - of course you can gain accreditation, but knowledge of every section will prepare you more fully for when you’re in industry, where knowledge of all four will be necessary. That’s why we believe you require information in everythi

New Senior to the Forum - (USA)
I have been retired for 15 yrs and use my computer as a home record keeper and source to the outside world. I like to surf the web for information to support purchases, medical supplies, reseach projects, commuicate with friends, on-line shopping, and many other tasks I can't think of now. Since I retired in 1993 I am amazed at the advancement of computers and systems. So much so I read the Windows BBS newsletters and Postings to solve my problems and keep up to date. I just purchased a new 1

In Apple’s Defense - (USA)
Y esterday, I helped proofread my friend Jason’s essay, The Case Against Apple—In Five Parts , which is currently top of Techmeme . It’s an interesting take on the state of Apple that you should all read and that I sincerely hope that someone at Apple reads and listens to. However, since the essay went live, I’ve been thinking about how Apple would reply to this case, were it actually a trial, or were Apple and Steve Jobs the type of company and CEO that ever listened and responded to users

Defense Department computers severely hacked in widespread electronic attack that may have originate - (USA)
WASHINGTON (ChattahBox) - A severe and widespread electronic attack on Defense Department computers that may have originated from Russia, forced senior military leaders to take the exceptional step of briefing President George W. Bush. The first indication of a problem in the Pentagon’s computers was noticed last week, when officials banned the use of external computer flash drives. However, officials at the time did not indicate the extent of the attack or the fact that it may have targeted De

Chess Computing - (USA)
Chess enthusiasts and computer engineers have attempted to build, with increasing degrees of seriousness and success, chess-playing machines since 1769. Motivations can essentially be consolidated into two: firstly, to build a machine to play chess with for solo entertainment, and secondly, to investigate chess as a problem which might provide some insight into human cognition. In this view, the history of computer chess is both a spectacular success and a virtually complete failure. Chess-p

Some XP systems show "cable disconnected" upon start up or reboot - (USA)
Alex, If you swap computers generally the troubled computer starts to behave on a new port. But oddly, a new computer has the problem less often on the troubled port. So there is definitely some issue with some computers which exacerbates the problem, but it is certainly port specific. I've also ruled out the wiring. The same cable run on a troubled port behaves perfectly on a different port. Also, there are various ports on various blades. I'm not sure if it happens on every single blade, b

Effective Concurrency: Design for Manycore Systems - (USA)
This month’s Effective Concurrency column, Design for Manycore Systems , is now live on DDJ’s website. From the article: Why worry about “manycore” today? Dual- and quad-core computers are obviously here to stay for mainstream desktops and notebooks. But do we really need to think about "many-core" systems if we’re building a typical mainstream application right now? I find that, to many developers, "many-core" systems still feel fairly remote, and not an immediate issue to think abo

The Case Against Apple Is Just As Much A Case For Apple - (USA)
I’ve had a half dozen or so longer posts about Apple brewing in my head the past couple of weeks. There is no shortage of controversy surrounding the company right now thanks largely to the hugely popular and hugely unpopular aspects of the iPhone. But Jason Calacanis’ post yesterday entitled “ The Case Against Apple-in Five Parts ” serves as a great springboard for bringing up a lot of it. The Backstory While my story with computers doesn’t go back quite as far as Calacanis’, our stor
