Bet Jamaica Daily Sports Roundup: August 9 - (USA)
Today in the Daily Sports Roundup: The Sprint Cup Series hits a road course, the NFL begins its preseason, and the Yankees and Red Sox complete their set. Battling on the gridiron . . . The National Football League kicks off its exhibition slate on Sunday with the Bills taking on the Titans in the Hall of Fame Game in Canton. Prized acquisition Terrell Owens will be making his Buffalo debut in that contest, but don’t expect to see the wide receiver on the field for more than a few series.

Sowle Train - (USA)
Back on April 27th, I ran a Ticker item about this page from a 1958 MacGregor catalog. “Dig item G914,” I wrote. “Who’s Ted Sowle?” A reader helped fill in some of the blanks with this comment , but that didn’t address the question of the headgear shown in the old catalog. Had Sowle designed it, or had it been named after him for some other reason? I got an answer a few days later, when I received an e-mail from one Ted Sowle. But no, not that Ted Sowle. Here’s what the note said: Ted

Fantasy Baseball Tonight 5/13; Pitchers, Catchers, Prospects and Injuries - (USA)
Catchers Geovany Soto finally was able to hit his first home run of the year. His owners have been cursing his name between his injury and just general struggles that he has had. I still have faith in Soto, even with his .193 average. The guy hopefully will get going now that he got that first home run out of the way. Keep the faith, it will pay off. Chris Iannetta hit his second grand slam of the week, and is now looking like the quality catcher I thought he would be when the season

Fordyce Forum and Keeping Strong Recruiters Busy - (USA)
When asked to contribute a post to share my excitement about the Fordyce Forum, while spending a working vacation on the family farm in the middle of the Smokies, I wondered what this ole “country boy” could contribute. This (working vacation) is an escape from the reality of finding good job orders in this economy, or trying to find some evidence of a recovery in this economy. I can look out any window and see more trees than I will see in Las Vegas in 100 years, but somehow I will try to

Technology Is A Tool To Reach Your Lord Allah - (USA)
Science & Technology can become a powerful tool to identify our Creator! For a moment it feels amazing and question arises that how it can be? But what I found is that it is the most successful way to understand the power and supremacy of the Lone Ruler and Cherisher of this Universe. The scientific inventions during the period of past two centuries have changed the face of our world to a great extent. I may call the present era as extremely progressive and in fact an eye opener for ma

Should Arsenal’s Manuel Almunia be picked for England? - (USA)
Comment & analysis round-up Quote of the day : “Theo [Walcott] sometimes asks me if I will take the citizenship and I say: ‘Yes, if you want?’ Then he says, yes, he would like me to. But all the England players are very important. I would like to know what they think and if I will be welcome. I have to see what people think because it’s not an easy decision. I’m 32 so I don’t want any problems with anyone. This is not a silly thing. You are playing with the hearts of people. It [an Engla

Field Size - (USA)
WHAT FIELD SIZE DO YOU PREFER TO BET ON? I know there is a correlation between field size and handle. Just take a look at any result charts and see which races get the largest handle at any track. But as a handicapper, too many 12-14 horse races can be quick bankroll killers. Personally, I prefer races with 8-11 horses in it. 8 horses are OK for exactors, doubles and pick 3's, and when it comes to supers and tris, 9 horse races are OK, but I tend to want 10 or 11 horse races for those type

Swimming vs athletics - (USA)
World records in swimming compared to records in athletics - interesting observations Two days ago, I did a post looking at the absolute "cleansing" of the record books in the sport of swimming this year. 70 records in 2008, 66 Olympic records in the recent Beijing Olympics, and swimmers who began the year as world record holders (think Alexander Popov) suddenly find themselves outside the top 10 in that same event by the end of August! It has been an unprecedent explosion in the sport, one whi

Indy Lights: Top-5 for Plowman as Davison cruises to win - (USA)
A year ago James Davison won the Mid-Ohio Indy Lights race under bizarre circumstances in a rain storm – this season he returned to do it the conventional way, leading from pole to flag and giving Vision Racing its first-ever victory. Briton Martin Plowman tied his best finish of the season by advancing from seventh on the grid to fifth at the flag. The 2008 Mid-Ohio 100 featured foul weather and a late safety car, and when it came into the pits with a lap to go it was followed by the leader

We're Number 36!!! - (USA)
ESPN, the Disney-owned American cable TV network that touts itself as the ‘worldwide leader in sports’, asked a 8-person panel of sports experts to determine the “toughest” sport. The panel evaluated 60 sports in 10 different categories: endurance, strength, power, speed, agility, flexibility, nerve, durability, hand-eye coordination and analytic aptitude. The 8 experts judged each sport in the 10 categories on a scale of 1-to-10. The responses were compiled to give each sport a degree-of-dif

Well, sorry. Drew’s having some elective surgery and won’t be around this week. Welcome to life; get used to disappointment. But on to m

PAULICK PREAKNESS INDEX by AmWest Entertainment: ALEXANDRA THE GREAT? - (USA)
It has been almost two weeks since Mine That Bird and jockey Calvin Borel shocked the sports world with their improbable long shot victory in the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs. And as with any Derby aftermath, the question lingers in the air; will this be the year we end the Triple Crown drought? If our voters are any indication, the answer is an emphatic no as Mine That Bird is ranked in fourth place among the 14 horses prospective Preakness starters. Furthermore, Calvin Borel’s decision

Comparing 100 meter Freestyle and 400 meter Sprinting - (USA)
The 100 meter freestyle in swimming resembles the 400 sprint in running. Their Elite times are in the mid 40’s second range and both events have similar energy systems: Alactic anerobic and Lactic anerobic. Between 1968 and 2004, only 7 men has run under the magic 44 seconds barrier for the 400 meters (and two of them were at altitude!). Since then, two new stars, namely Jeremy Warnier and Lashawn Merritt were added to that exclusive list. That makes a total of NINE since 1968. The 1
