OIA and ILH Football "Officially" Merge! - (USA)
Hello all, The View Tube is back from a summer vacation.  So you can check back regularly for "new" OC16 and sports news as we ramp up towards our 21st-year of high school football. As the title above says, it's true OIA and ILH football will be as one this fall - specifically - in terms of officiating crews. All of these previous years, seperate officials' organization handled each league.  Not so in the upcoming season.  The group servicing the ILH will no longer be wearing the stripes

Favre, Jets Turn Titans' Tough Guy into Whiny Little Bitch - (USA)
Favre, Jets Turn Titans' Tough Guy into Whiny Little Bitch Most of you know that I'm a huge Brett Favre fan. I've seen or listened to every game he's started in his NFL career, and that has not changed, despite him becoming a New York Jet this season. This season has been bizarre for me. My wife and I finally got the NFL Sunday Ticket so we could see every game. I've seen every Green Bay Packers game this year, every New York Jets game, every Arizona Cardinals game (they are finally watchable

The Great College Football Debate: The Michigan State Spartans - (USA)
With Michigan Football just weeks away, the guys at Maize n Brew are getting a little antsy for the season to start. The only way around it? Argue about football. Argue a lot. Each of us have already gone through Michigan's 2009 Football Schedule with a fine tooth comb a single half-assed glance and come out with completely different opinions on games, wins, losses, and season outcomes. Take a look for yourself, here are Beauford's , MnB Dave's , and SCM's predictions. With t

Fans need to rein in Goodell - (USA)
Wouldn't it be nice if NFL games were decided by football players on the field? I have felt for years like a lone voice in the wind decrying the appalling officiating crews that dot Roger Goodell's landscape. But I always got the same tired, old cliches in response to my criticism: Only losers complain; good teams overcome bad breaks; officials are human, and they make mistakes And let's face it, good teams do overcome bad breaks and officials are human. Even coaches, who may lose their job o

Didn’t See Those Results Coming - (USA)
July 12th, 2009SerenityLeave a commentGo to comments Good morning Rider Nation!!! Its game day and you are getting ready for a little football–albeit early with the 11 AM kickoff. As you start to read this, a little question for you. What result last night left you happier? I–and many others–did not think both the Ti-Cats and Bombers would win their games. I–and many others–am not disappointed with the fact that both BC and Calgary are 0-2.What is wrong with Calgary??? They seem to have lost th

Quint Kessenich: How to improve college officiating - (USA)
High School, MLL, NCAA, OfficialsAugust 6th, 2009 by Quint Kessenich Share: Go to IL.com Blog Home Lacrosse is a complicated game to officiate — the ball moves fast and players shuffle in and out of the substitution box, each team making hundreds of changes per game. The rulebook is thick. Rules are subjective. There are myriad responsibilities. This article is not meant to criticize officials. It’s geared toward referee improvement. Bottom line: How can we maximize referee performance?

Be a Good Sport: A Guide to Sportmanship - (USA)
Source: Life There’s a reason so many motivational speakers use sports as a metaphor for life. There are innumerable  parallels between what it takes to be successful both in real life and on the playing field. The qualities of determination, skill, and hard work contribute to a man’s chance of winning in both arenas. There is a parallel between life and sports that doesn’t get enough attention, however, and that’s the connection between a man’s character off the field and his good sportsma

Still shopping? - (USA)
July22 Here’s what’s left on the NHL free-agent market, from NHL.com. I am not sure how up-to-date this list is, since Dane Byers is still listed as a free agent and the Rangers announced that they had signed him.And there may be a few more free agents added to the mix as teams walk away from salary arbitration decisions (Nik Zherdev?). Region Ten Chairman responds to ‘school sports’ allegations - (USA)
Dear Editor, As Chairman of Region 10, I had initially refrained from commenting on the various statements attributed to the President of the Guyana Teachers’ Union and others in the media, which in the main appear to condemn and vilify the 48th National Schools’ Track & Field, Cycling, Swimming and Teachers’ Championships hosted by Region 10 this year. However, certain of those comments, struck a chord with me, especially those which appeared in the Stabroek News and Kaieteur News of Thu

Q. & A. With Michael Tunison on ‘Football Fan’s Manifesto’ - (USA)
One of the problems with fandom has always been that there is no real set of rules. A person could feel free to root for the Chiefs one year, then switch allegiances to the Cowboys the next, and there was no rulebook to reference to show them that what they did was wrong. Michael Tunison has corrected that with his new book, “The Football Fan’s Manifesto,” which is scheduled to be released laster this month.Tunison, one of the founding writers of the controversial blog KissingSuzyKolber, gained

I Love the Sabres! - (USA)
Isn't it crazy how you can be completely exasperated with a sports team one moment (Mark said to me earlier this week, "Hockey is making you very violent") and then just completely overrun with affection for them the next moment? That's how I feel right now. Henrik Tallinder played well again, Maxim Afinogenov had one of his best games of the season, the penalty killing was awesome and game-changing, Derek Roy and Drew Stafford both look like hockey players again and Paul Gaustad, dear sweet Goo

When Someone Criticizes An Award - (USA)
This is a follow-on entry from yesterday’s post concerning Adam Robert’s screed regarding the Hugo’s, some of the comments in that entry. Full disclosure: I’ve yet to read any of Mr. Robert’s works.  In looking at reviews and comments on it (blurbs & whatnots) I am somewhat intrigued.  Response seems to be running about 50/50 (favorable/unfavorable) which proves that he’s got an audience.  But I’ll not be addressing his works here - at least not until I’ve read something by him. Can someone please tell Roger Goodell that the NFL is facing larger issues than misbehaving mascots - (USA)
Wow that might be my longest title ever. The NFL is tons of image problems right now, from steroid usage, Spy-Gate, horrid officiating & Pac-Man Jones. Given all that Sheriff Goodell has deemed misbehaving mascots atop his priority list. His first target is Rowdy who is the Dallas Cowboys’ answer to Nebraska’s Big Red that doubles as a mascot. Tim MacMahon of the Dallas Morning News warns that Rowdy is about get his ass handed to him for of all things, doing his job which is to have fun

Two Minute Warning: Air Coryell, GSOT, Superfreak and Friends, Part II - (USA)
Editor’s Note: Apparently, Derek has gone mad this week, dividing his already lengthy column into two parts this week. Part I can be found here. Ten Things We Learned in Week 11 1. The Steelers/Chargers finish likely cost fantasy owners: “The illegal forward pass” at the end of the Steelers/Chargers game not only cost people a ton of money in Las Vegas, but also may short circuited a few owners of the Steeler defense, who could have used the last second touchdown. 2. Game 6: Savannah State at Michigan Post Game - (USA)
Highlights | Archived Video A 66-64 overtime win over Savannah State isn’t going to wow anyone but this is the kind of game that can bring teams together. This is another instance of this Michigan team facing adversity and fighting through it. Yes they came out flat early, but they took Savannah State’s best punch and kept fighting. Nothing went right for Michigan in the first half. The Wolverines turned the ball over 12 times, shot 31% (0-8 from long range), and found themselves down 39-

Life’s Not Fair (Royals Edition) - (USA)
The older I get, the less tolerant I am of excuses. I’m not entirely sure why this is … maybe it’s because the older I get the more I appreciate that concept introduced to me when I was probably 7 years old, the concept that life isn’t fair. When I was young, I thought that this was simply a way for my parents to explain why I had to go to bed before Laverne and Shirley was on. “That’s not fair.” “Life isn’t fair.” As I got older, I realized that it was much more serious than that, that

Uncontrolled Spread Wagering & Proposition Bets Undermining Sports - (USA)
I've written previously about sport wagering and money laundering as well as problems in professional tennis (see previous articles). Basically, criminals use massive wagers on marginal sporting events to launder money and manipulate the outcomes of the games. Apparently, professional tennis is not alone in having a growing problem with fixed games. Soccer (Football for everyone outside the US) is also being manipulated by criminal gambling groups (mostly out of Asia, apparently) according to
