Medal of Freedom Winners - (USA)
Well, the healthcare debate is depressing as a senator from Idaho representing 1/4 of 1% of the population is threatening to kill a public option in healthcare desired by 72% of the population (90% of Democrats and even 50% of Republicans!). And the civil rights situation is depressing–from Skip Gates arrest at his own home because he was rude to a cop (I don’t which scares me more: that this was racially motivated or that it wasn’t and the new police policy is to arrest anyone in our own homes

Speed Dating and Poly Organizing - (USA)
November 8, 2008 — pepomint This writeup started as a report on a poly speed dating event I have been helping to organize, and turned into a meditation on holding innovative poly events. If you want to skip the somewhat lengthy event report, head down to the Speed Dating and Poly Organizing section. To date, we have held two poly speed dating events in Berkeley. They have been raucous and fun, a whirlwind carnival of romance and rejection. Our first event attracted fifty people to a pizzeri

On Tolerance, Segregation and Chicago’s Gay-Friendly High School - (USA)
Here in Chicago, there are talks of a gay-friendly high school opening because, as this report by CNN puts it, “harassment and violence are causing gay students to skip class and drop out at alarming rates.” The new school would create a safe haven for gay, lesbian and bisexual students but would not cater exclusively to this population. The school would be open to all students. The curriculum would fall in line with other Chicago Public Schools but would incorporate lessons on sexual identit

Sharing stories with the Chapel Hill HS Gay-Straight Alliance - (USA)
On Monday I attended the regular meeting of the Gay-Straight-Alliance at Chapel Hill High School and it was a wonderful experience, being surrounded by so many self-aware, talented and insightful young people who were willing to share with me what life is like for them as LGBTs and allies in 2008. I was invited by the advisor for the GSA, chemistry instructor and strong ally Alan Rissberger (known as "the Riz" to the folks). He has created a casual, comfortable and nurturing environment for the

Eating Disorders in Men - (USA)
When we think of eating disorders, we rarely picture a man working out obsessively, starving himself to look lean or wanting to emulate celebrities on magazine covers. For years, eating disorders have been viewed as a “white woman’s disease.” And estimates of male eating disorders told a similar story: while the majority of women suffered from eating disorders, only about 10 percent of men did. Recent research, however, paints a different, bigger picture: more men are suffering from eating

Harvey Milk to Receive Presidential Medal of Freedom - (USA)
Belatedly - and likely as another sop thrown to betrayed LGBT Americans - President Barack Obama has announced that the late Harvey Milk will receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom as one of "16 Agents of Change." Please, do not get me wrong. I truly believe that Harvey Milk deserves the award and it's very sad that he isn't here to accept it because of homophobia that lead in part to his murder. The same kind of homophobia that Obama refuses to refute by real substantive action to end DADT
