A little bit of culture - (USA)
A little bit of culture I am really pleased that I was able to finish off the final editing and proof reading for the new book 'Connected Minds, Emerging Cultures' which has now gone to press. A whole host of people have contributed toward the 17 chapters in the volume. The publishers, Information Age, who are based in the USA, Greenwich, Connecticut, are already publicising it on their website, and I have seen some of the cover artwork, so publication is imminent. Here's the blurb (wot I wro

The Coming Kulturkampf - (USA)
From First Things By Richard John Neuhaus Many who do not embrace the Christian faith nonetheless have a high appreciation of the importance of Christianity to the cultural and social order. Theirs is an instrumental view of religion. Edward Gibbon caught the idea nicely, and in his usual caustic manner, when describing the religious cults of the Roman Empire. He says the common people viewed them as true, the philosophers viewed them as false, and the rulers viewed them as useful. Today’s poli

Academics – the next part of the People section - (USA)
The following is the next part of the People section for chapter 2 of my thesis . The People section was started a week ago with this post . This one takes up the task of saying something about academic staff, subsequent and soon to be completed sections will look at management, academic staff developers and technology staff. While I think some of the stuff in the following is important and overlooked, I just can’t help feeling that it is, not to put to fine a point on it, crap. But hopefull

Jim Selman: California Rising - (USA)
I spent the weekend in California, hanging out with my children and visiting old friends. I was in both Los Angeles and San Francisco and picked up on the current mood from both ends of the State--at least based on my small sample of conversations. The consensus is that California is a great place to live, but a fiscal and political mess. The deficit is staggering (over 25 billion and rising). The governor has been terminated politically speaking and can't get the politicians or the public to

RIP Steven Wells: The Best That Ever Did It. - (USA)
The greatest music writer that ever did it is dead . Load of fucking DICK. Reports the meeja: “Steven Wells died on Tuesday after finally losing his fight against cancer.” Of course, Swells wouldn’t have said that. Writing about his experience with the disease in The Philadelphia Weekly a few years back , he put it like this: “No one ever ‘battles bravely against cancer’. This is utter bullshit. You do your chemo, take your drugs and hang on for dear life.” I fucking love tha

Coming to Terms with “Contextualization” Part 1-Formative History and Shift to “Cultural Engagement” - (USA)

Or do you see the two as different (contextualization and questions fo

Milk and blood: Visions of St. Harvey - (USA)
By Marke B. This week, as part of our Milk Issue, dedicated to the political memory of Harvey Milk, I take a look at some of the ways Harvey has been transformed into an icon of queer martyrdom -- for good or ill. I cheekily reference the extremely moving 2004 "Saint Harvey: The Life and Afterlife of a Modern Gay Martyr" show at the GLBT Historical Society, which will also open a temporary exhibit about Harvey on the Castro beginning November 26, in conjunction with the nationwide release o

Tocqueville on the Shores of Titicaca - (USA)
Amid Alexis de Tocqueville’s writings on revolution in France, there is a passage that rings true for those of us who have spent time in the countryside. He observed that however lively affairs of state might seem, it is often hard to get a peasant to take much interest in them. The remote happenings in a national capital rarely seem to have much practical import for one tilling the soil. But propose to run a road past a peasant’s property, Tocqueville added, and he will promptly take a deep

The “Brüno” Imbrüglio - (USA)
Brüno , Sacha Baron Cohen’s latest mockumentary, has been criticized by gay rights groups like GLAAD for reinforcing stereotypes about gay people and “decreas[ing] the public’s comfort with [them].” The movie’s eponymous main character is a flamboyant, fame-mongering Austrian who throughout the film is shown engaging in a hot tub romp beside his adopted black baby, “O.J.”; tethered to his partner by S&M gear to which he has lost the key; and using a bicycle affixed with a long rod to its whe

Random Things About Maxi Kim - (USA)
Interview by Richard Marshall. 3:AM: In your Semina novel One Break A Thousand Blows you describe Stewart Home as being ‘a teddy bear.’ How was it working with him on the production of the book? How did he contribute to the creative process with you? You say that 69 Things To Do With A Dead Princess was an important catalyst for your book – can you say something about this? MK: In retrospect I should’ve described Stewart Home as a pussy cat. Prior to meeting him I was nervous;

Bro, Did You Kill College Life? - (USA)
Part 1: The Terms Of Engagement By: Brandon J. Mendelson There are many questions about whether or not pop culture killed “college life”. The following are my favorites: Are programs like Undergrads accurate portrayals of students? Is Facebook more popular than campus activities? What happened to the sense of community on campus? Why are students in pop culture portrayed as searching for their identity? Does almost every college production feature an upper-middle class honkey with

Porn: Just Another Business? - (USA)
On society’s list of most shameful professions, the pornographer would be near the top. What must pornographers think of themselves? They would argue that their industry has joined the mainstream, yet for porn performers, it’s a sordid career fraught with perils of drugs, disease, and in the darker corners of porn, exploitation and abuse. Take the case of a true pervert, Paul Little, who calls himself “Max Hardcore.” The British author Martin Amis submerged himself in the sleaziest subcu

“ The celebrity economy. The last of this century’s great trends was noted by acute observers in 1996, yet somehow most people failed to appreciate it. Although business gurus were proclaiming the predominance of creativity and innovation over mere routine production, in fact the growing ease with which information could be transmitted and reproduced was making it ever harder for creators to profit from their creations.
