Jon & Kate: a sign of the times to come - (USA)
If you’ve been off-planet for the last few months you may have missed the news: Jon & Kate have split , and in the process migrated from the relative banality of the TV listings over to the hyper-banality of the tabloids. I’m still not sure what the future holds for the popular “reality” show, but whatever it is, Gosselin family 2.0 equals Jon minus Kate. It occurs to me that these events represent something significant in our culture. Since about 1980 or so we’ve been in one of our perio

He Should Know- Westminsters’ Cultural Marxists’ Cameron Brown and Co…. - (USA)
Dr Simon Newman: Are We All Cultural Marxists Now? Dr Simon Newman is Senior Lecturer in Law at the University of Westminster. I am now about to commit the cardinal sin for a Conservative, and discuss philosophy. Cultural Marxism: a philosophy which Conservatism has frequently opposed, but rarely understood. Cultural Marxism as a term was apparently coined by the American military theoretician William S Lind. Its roots lie in the First World War, and it must be recognised as the most su

ESSAY: HISTORY OF OBLITERATION OF SIKKIM AND ITS PEOPLE: - (USA)
Posted by barunroy on November 30, 2008 FROM SURVIVAL SIKKIM ( I ) The process of obliteration of Sikkim and its people was initiated by the British in the late nineteenth century. Sikkim left with the Chhogyal was conquered by the British in 1888 and was partitioned in 1890 by entering into a convention with Imperial China. This was done all for obliteration of the ethnic Sikkimese Bhutias. The British plotted changing Sikkim demographically with their Gorkha ally. The territories of Sikk

Is a moral instinct the source of our noble thoughts? - (USA)
Until not too long ago, most people believed human morality was based on scripture, culture or reason. Some stressed only one of those sources, others mixed all three. None would have thought to include biology. With the progress of neuroscientific research in recent years, though, a growing number of psychologists, biologists and philosophers have begun to see the brain as the base of our moral views. Noble ideas such as compassion, altruism, empathy and trust, they say, are really evolutionary

Pakistan First! - (USA)
Jokes Too Far Wajid Ali Syed August 10th, 2009 You can't deny the importance of humor in life. One of the first steps to ensuring a nation’s death is to regulate and ban its humor. Humor implies tolerance. Without it a people wither on the vine. Humor is not necessarily portable. People the world over can relate to Three Stooges-like pratfalls and jokes about meddlesome mothers-in-law or nagging wives or hapless husbands. Many American jokes could probably be enjoyed in Pakistan, like this one

“Broke” Reviewed by Glenn Erickson - (USA)
A nice review of Broke . An excerpt: An astute video essay on the state of financial security these days in the good ol’ United States of Uncertainty, Broke: The New American Dream is a quality show made by Michael Covel, of TurtleTrader.com. The picture begins with Covel lecturing the camera from an empty office space high above the city streets, and proceeds through 85 minutes of somewhat meandering observations about the Shape of Things We Fear in the world of finance. Broke does a

Great Moments in Birding History: Identifying a Cape May Warbler - (USA)
Up until the early 1900s the birding scene was still dominated by the shotgun set. That is, to identify the birds that one could see, one shot them and collected their still-warm carcasses for identification purposes. Some had switched over to using the low-powered optics of the day but this new method of identifying birds hadn’t quite taken hold with the old guard yet. Of course, there was no Peterson Field Guide at the turn of the century (and certainly no Sibley), so one pretty much had t

Culturalism or...? - (USA)
On this blog, we return every so often to the discussion of culture vs. race, or nature vs. nurture, if you like. Over at TakiMag, there is a piece by John Derbyshire in which he addresses this issue. Derbyshire discusses how some, who, although believing that human beings evolved in Africa 50,000 years ago, then stopped evolving suddenly after dispersing throughout the world, in groups widely separated from one another. That does seem quite a contradiction for those who believe in evolution.

Poor teady bear - (USA)
What´s this? A little gayish teady with low self-esteem? In psychology, self-esteem reflects a person's overall self-appraisal of their own worth. Psychological literature and popular culture both concentrate on the presence or absence of high self-esteem, however some evidence suggests that the overemphasis on the self-esteem mantra can lead to rapid falls when the self becomes invalidated in the domains that one considers important. In addition this pursuit may have negative c
