Five and One-Half Utopias - (USA)
November 29, 2008 Years ago I read an article so stimulating that I copied it and filed it - “Five and a Half Utopias” by physicist Steven Weinberg. In it, he disputes our tendency to idealize our human pursuits, and specifically disassembles five utopian ideals - bad thought habits, I suppose. They are 1)free markets, 2) rule by the best and brightest, 3) religious, 4) green, and 5) technological utopias. (The “half” utopia is one that he himself idealizes, the Civilized Egalitarian Capitalis

Business as a Calling – Work and the Examined Life - (USA)
Business as a Calling Work and the Examined Life Why do we work so hard at our jobs, day after day? Why is a job well done important to us? We know there is more to a career than money and prestige, but what exactly do we mean by “fulfillment”? These are old but important questions. They belong with some newly discovered ones: Why are people in business more religious than the population as a whole? What do people of business know, and what do they do, th

By Ashot Melkonian Translated by T. Sonentz-Papazian Part II: The Tragic Page of Javakhq’s History (1918-21) As early as before World War I, the administrative division of Trans-Caucasia became a subject of serious discussion among many national and political circles—a matter of great importance to Armenian, Georgian, and Tatar (Azerbaijani) activists who explained the Czarist-implemented divisions by the failure of the latter’s consideration of national territorial factors. Is Your Advertising Agency a Practice or a Business? - (USA)
Is Your Advertising Agency a Practice or a Business? Vernon C. Kenny, MD When I was a kid, Doc Kenny was our family physician. His office was over a hardware store in our village. When I had an ear-ache or it was time for a vaccination, mom would send me off to see the doctor. I’d trudge up the stairs to his office with the five dollar bill she had given me to pay him for the visit. Although he was a lone practitioner, Dr. Kenny took good care of me and my family. The customer is in charge - (USA)
The shift away from blind faith and unquestioned brand loyalty is good for both customers and organizations. “Inch by inch, voter by voter, Barack Obama and John McCain labored for more than a year to lock down supporters and woo defectors,” an Associated Press story stated in November 2008. “It turns out, though, that the nation’s voters were a lot more fickle than commonly expected, and far more prone to switch allegiances.” “Conventional political wisdom says it can be pretty much taken fo

Rachel Corrie in Palestine…and in San Francisco - (USA)
By Joel Beinin August 2009 The San Francisco Jewish Film Festival, the oldest such festival in the United States, was founded in rebellion against received wisdom. Since 1980, the festival has promoted independent Jewish films that contest the conventional Hollywood depiction of Jewish life, particularly its lachrymose over-concentration on Jewish victimhood, and regularly presented “al

Clinton: Rape In Congo Must Stop - (USA)
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has called for accountability from Congolese President, Joseph Kabila, to prosecute rapists in that country. Women and children have been victims of rape by military soldiers since 1996. During her visit to the African country this week, Clinton — who has been advocating for women’s rights throughout her trip — grieved over the suffering of women in that region. Speaking from Kinshasa, Clinton said: “We have seen in the late 20th century and now in

The right’s Big Lies about Obama’s healthcare plan - (USA)
Here are a couple of harrowing examples of the toxic lies that the Republicans are spreading far and wide about Obama’s healthcare plan: Sarah Palin’s lurid and fantastic charge that it’s an “evil” commie program, and, below that, an equally preposterous email from Human Events Online. Now, it’s not enough just to deplore this crap, and/or just try to set the record straight (which would involve not just refuting all such fabrications, but also pointing out exactly where and how Obama’s plan i

Bibi Advocates Banning Foreign Funding of Israeli NGOs, Echoes Putin’s Russia - (USA)
Despite my criticisms of various Israeli governments, I never thought I’d see one emulate the authoritarianism of Vladimir Putin’s security state called Russia. Since Breaking the Silence published a deeply disturbing series of IDF soldiers’ accounts of Israeli misconduct in Gaza, the government has gone on a counter-offensive. The foreign ministry has petitioned the governments of every European country that provided financial support for the report and complained that such support was an i

Who Attacked Mumbai and Why it DOESN'T Matter - (USA)
For five days now the media has been speculating just who is behind the horrible attacks in Mumbai whether it was al-Qaeda or a local terrorist group, whether they were targeting Indians, British, Americans, Jews or all of the above. The real truth is, it doesn't really matter. Terrorism like politics is local. And whether the group that caused all of the death in Mumbai is al-Qaeda or just a franchise, the truth is they support an Ideology that hates ALL non-Muslims, and they threaten us all: M

Order Business Cards - (USA)
Austria is one of the most beautiful countries in the world. With hundreds of miles of mountains and valleys, picturesque alpine villages and town and scenery straight out of Mary Poppins. Doing business in Austria is not for the faint hearted. This isn’t meant as a slight, merely an observation. The Austrians are very formulaic and detail oriented. Any visiting businessman must be very experienced and know his company and product or service very, very well. Austria is a very formal p

Kadyrov's Unlikely Victims - (USA)
Philip P. Pan of the Washington Post has some better information on the married couple who were murdered in Chechnya yesterday. Ramzan Kadryov's quote is breathtaking: in explaining that he would have no reason to have one woman killed, he gives a reason why he would want Natalia Estemirova killed. C'mon now, let's just try a little harder here. She said Sadulayeva avoided political activism and never challenged the government. But Save the Generation's former director was found slai

Russian Federation: Stop the hunt on human rights activists - (USA)
The latest murder of a human rights activist in Chechnya demonstrates the complete disregard of the rule of law that prevails in Chechnya today, Amnesty International said. The organization strongly condemns the killing of Zarema Sadulayeva and her husband, Alik (Umar) Dzhabrailov, whose bodies were found in the boot of a car early this morning in the Chechen capital Grozny. They had both been shot. Zarema Sadulayeva was the head of the Russian charity, Let’s Save the Children, which helps ch

Advice to a young leftist - (USA)
I WAS quite flattered to get an email in this blog’s inbox last week from a young man of 19, asking my advice on getting involved with leftwing politics for the first time. While he finds the SWP impressive in many respects, he is aware of its well-deserved reputation for sectarianism and control freakery. On the other hand, he is considering involvement with the Labour Party, in the hope that it it will evolve in a more progressive direction in the coming period. I’m sure many regular readers
