An Interview with Daniel Everett - author of DON'T SLEEP THERE ARE SNAKES - (USA)
A week or so ago I had the great privilege of reading DON'T SLEEP THERE ARE SNAKES by Daniel Everett.Daniel Everett, a young missionary, goes to live with a small remote tribe of Piraha Indians in the Amazonian jungle. He is there to learn their language in order to translate the New Testament. But he doesn't go alone, and this, really, is one of the more remarkable features of the story: he goes with his three young children and wife. Within weeks the wife and eldest child are seriously ill

Wanna Take a Korean Studies Class? - (USA)
Or any others? This is a bit late notice, as I didn't think this had come into my inbox, but it did -- do YOU want to get some real Korean Studies experience as well as nearly free Korean language classes? If you do happen to have time, get on the stick and call into the office. The first couple of days are usually organizational chaos, anyway. Here's the announcement: ------------ Hankuk University of Foreign Studies opens its English language International Summer Session in Korean Studies (

Project to Document NE’s Endangered Languages - (USA)
Guwahati, Nov 23 : An intelligent mix of community involvement and government support could possibly help revitalize some languages of the North-east, which face threats of being endangered, and worse, dying out. Research scientists Dr Gregory Anderson and Dr K David Harrison of the Living Tongues Institute for Endangered Languages, told The Assam Tribune that the people of the region should appreciate the incredible diversity of languages and dialects, which they believe is also a common tre

How to Speak and Write Postmodern - (USA)
Posted by: karlo mikhail on: November 2, 2008 In: Escritura Comment! This is a repost of an essay by Stephen Katz, Associate Professor of Sociology at Trent University, Peterborough, Ontario, Canada: Postmodernism has been the buzzword in academia for the last decade. Books, journal articles, conference themes and university courses have resounded to the debates about postmodernism that focus on the uniqueness of our times, where computerization, the global economy and the media have irrevoc

What makes Obama black? - (USA)
by Jim Rotholz We stand on the verge of electing the first African-American as president of the United States – and the country is pulsing with anticipation. Senator Obama’s rise to prominence has brought tears of joy from the eyes of many who have long waited for the sight of a non-white nominee. By anyone’s measure, it is an historic occasion for our nation with its dubious racial past. But there seems something askew with the notion that the offspring of an Anglo mother and an East African

Brooks Peters: Le Mot Juiced - (USA)
The other evening, while watching a rerun of Antiques Roadshow (yes, I'll admit my life is rather dull), I was shocked to hear one of the ritzy appraisers describe a rare objet d'art some lucky soul brought in with a bunch of other stuff as the "coo de graah." Of course he meant "coup de grâce, a much-misunderstood French expression. He was misusing the term since it does not mean the best of the best, or even the ultimate prize, as he seemed to indicate. It is a Gallic term meaning death

A Cultural Symbol Passes from the Scene: Ji Xianlin, Not Michael Jackson - (USA)
By Timothy B. Weston It’s been moving to watch the response in China to the July 11 death of renowned scholar, Ji Xianlin (1911-2009). While Ji’s unsurprising departure at the ripe old age of 98 has not brought quite the same flood tide of emotion and cultural stock taking in China as Michael Jackson’s completely unexpected death a few weeks earlier at age 50 has in the United States and around the world, the way the venerable scholar is being remembered in Beijing is nevertheless remarkable. Arts Policy Library: Gifts of the Muse - (USA)
(For a much briefer summary of this very long article, see this post here .) For this first official installment of the Arts Policy Library , I wanted to start at the beginning. Gifts of the Muse: Reframing the Debate About the Benefits of the Arts was the first research study to be mentioned on Createquity, way back in the fifth-ever post published on this blog. The book’s concise, 104-page length belies grand ambitions: between the covers, the authors, Kevin F. McCarthy, Elizabe

Invitation to a sandbagging… the Criminal Justice Bill in the Irish Times. - (USA)
Janus like the IT faces both ways – again. Consider it’s editorial yesterday on the Criminal Justice (Amendment) Bill. After outlining the nature of the problem and suggesting that ‘our existing criminal code seems inadequate’ it continues : This is the context in which the letter sent to this newspaper by 133 lawyers who are directly involved in both prosecuting and defending those accused of crime raises serious questions about the appropriateness of the response proposed by the Governmen

An Example Of Genuinely Bad Behavior Towards Gay People - (USA)
Posted by Huston on November 13, 2008 The burgeoning physical culture war over gay marriage (as evinced by a rowdy protest that almost looked like a riot at the LDS church’s Los Angeles temple and an older Christian woman being savagely harrassed in Palm Springs) is sobering and scary. I’ve already explained my defense of barring “gay marriage” at length elsewhere on this blog, but today I have a more sympathetic thought about this culture war in mind. I'm a student again! The 2nd section of my ESOL endorsement program started tonight. I took the first section last year, while I was pregnant. I had to stop when I was put on bedrest. Luckily, I can finish the sequence this year, with this class, one short class, and a brief practicum this summer. Then I will be certified not only to teach an ESOL class but also to support ELL students in regular education settings. I'm hoping for a position as an ESOL teacher, though.Being back in a class full

Immunology: UPDATED - (USA)
Working through Darwin’s Dangerous Idea with my students, I naturally have memes on my mind these days. Although there is a tendency for the concept of “memes” to be looked down upon in the world of theory, Dennett puts forward a number of striking ideas that are well worth consideration when thinking about the nature of language and culture. In Darwin’s Dangerous Idea , Dennett argues that memes, much like organisms, often form their own immunological system so as to help insure their repl
