1900 Oscar Fingal O'Flaherty Wills Wilde (b. 1854), Irish wit, playwright, self-professed anarchist, and gay pioneer, died of cerebral meningitis, following an ear infection, at the age of 46 in a Paris rooming house. For he who lives more lives than one, more deaths than one must die.Dublin-born Wilde published in 1890 The Soul of Man Under Socialism, which is characterized by its libertarian non-conformism. In 1895, he was condemned to two years hard labour for his homosexuality. He wrote De

Just Pent-Up Irrationality? Jennifer Rubin - 11.30.2008 - 9:27 AM If you are looking for moral gibberish on the subject of the Mumbai massacre you would be hard pressed to come up with a more exquisite example of utter confusion than this, from former Congressman Jim Leach: The Mumbai catastrophe underscores the importance of vocabulary. The issue is not “war;” it is “barbarism.” The former implies a cause: a national or tribal or ethnic rationale that infuses a sacrificial action with some

Chomsky on The Election, Economy, War, and Peace - (USA)
By Noam Chomsky. Republished from Znet 11/25/08 Noam Chomsky: Tireless critic of Western imperialism. Routinely blackballed by the corporate media he remains far less well known and influential at home than abroad. The Election The word that immediately rolled off of every tongue after the presidential election was "historic." And rightly so. A Black family in the White House is truly a momentous event. There were some surprises. One was that the election was not over after the Democrati

Newt Gingrich Defends Palin’s “Death Panel” Fear-Mongering - (USA)
On today’s This Week, Newt Gingrich repeated Sarah Palin’s paranoia-fueled rant about the health care bill currently before Congress creating “death panels” that will decide everyone’s fate: Newt Gingrich and Howard Dean went at it on health care this morning on This Week. Especially over Sarah Palin’s claim that Obama’s health care plan will create “death panels” that would encourage euthanasia. “Communal standards historically is a very dangerous concept,” Gingrich told me. “You are a

Hiding Behind the Pulpit with Bipolar Disorder - (USA)
I have an illness that affects nearly 1 out of every 17 Americans, and affects 1 out of every 5 families. This disease is chronic in nature, and can only be controlled, not cured. It is not consistent in either symptoms or treatments. Controlling the symptoms is a lifelong struggle, and can only be accomplished through therapy, medication and developing coping skills. People with this illness are treated like modern-day lepers. They are ridiculed, stereotyped and misrepresented in society. No

To the New York Times’s credit , they asked them. And this is what they found (from the beginning of the article, entitled “New Poll Finds Growing Unease on Health Plan”): President Obama’s ability to shape the debate on health care appears to be eroding as opponents aggressively portray his overhaul plan as a government takeover that could limit Americans’ ability to choose their doctors and course of treatment, according to the latest New York Times/CBS News poll. The New Trend - (USA)
There was a very dark spot in North American history when people were subjugated to ridiculous hatred and intolerance just because of the colour of their skin . These people were not treated like human beings; instead they were treated like animals. They were spat upon, forced to sit behind others in buses and even made to drink from different water fountains, as if dark skin brings disease. Thankfully, this time period has passed. Even though there are some individuals who still feel the s

Relationship failures - (USA)
Relationship failures (Friday 28 November 2008) ALAN SIMPSON ALAN SIMPSON on how to avoid a repeat of this crisis. WHEN a relationship breaks down, there are two things you can say with a degree of certainty. The first is that the most ferocious arguments will take place around the most marginal issues - how someone eats their cornflakes, who gets the CDs or the custody of the cat. The second certainty is that, when people fall out, everyone loses the plot. So it is in the f

New Blog: Museum of Family History - (USA)
Tracing the Tribe is a believer in passing on knowledge and was very happy to help a friend create his new blog. I sat with Steve Lasky, creator of the virtual Museum of Family History, at the Philly 2009 conference. He asked if I knew how he could inform more people about his excellent site . As most readers have already guessed, I suggested that he set up a blog. Right then and there, I showed Steve how to set one up at Blogger, and over several hours on two days, it took shape. He's a v

Culturalism or...? - (USA)
On this blog, we return every so often to the discussion of culture vs. race, or nature vs. nurture, if you like. Over at TakiMag, there is a piece by John Derbyshire in which he addresses this issue. Derbyshire discusses how some, who, although believing that human beings evolved in Africa 50,000 years ago, then stopped evolving suddenly after dispersing throughout the world, in groups widely separated from one another. That does seem quite a contradiction for those who believe in evolution.

Sage Advice From The Man From Plains - (USA)
It has often been said that Jimmy Carter did more good after leaving office than when he was President of the United States. Frankly, I think Carter gets a bum rap, and only failed as a President because he told the truth far more often than we in America could bear to hear it! Nevertheless, I’ve been thinking a lot about our words and our attitudes lately. In fact, I recently wrote a post here at VN entitled “The Raca Principle” (check it out if you need background to what I’m about to say).

Debt and the Fog of Numbers - (USA)
One of main reasons behind the vast confusion now reigning in the USA, our failure to construct a coherent consensus about what is happening to us (or what to do about it), is our foolish obsession with econometrics — viewing the world solely through the “lens” of mathematical models. We think that just because we can measure things in numbers, we can make sense of them. For decades we measured the health of our economy (and therefore of our society) by the number of “housing starts” recorded

Is Your Advertising Agency a Practice or a Business? - (USA)
Is Your Advertising Agency a Practice or a Business? Vernon C. Kenny, MD When I was a kid, Doc Kenny was our family physician. His office was over a hardware store in our village. When I had an ear-ache or it was time for a vaccination, mom would send me off to see the doctor. I’d trudge up the stairs to his office with the five dollar bill she had given me to pay him for the visit. Although he was a lone practitioner, Dr. Kenny took good care of me and my family.
