“BREAKING THE SILENCE” OR SILENCING THE CRITICS? - (USA)
Louis Frankenthaler Settlers in Hebron harass a cameraman from a Breaking the Silence tour of Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, June 2008. (Anne Paq/ ActiveStills ) “Breaking the Silence” is a member of the Israeli human rights, peace and social justice community. The group’s only crime, so it seems, lies in its effort to offer an alternative ethical voice in a society that is arguably losing its way. Breaking the Silen

SNGF: Genealogy Threes - (USA)
Randy Seaver at Genea-Musings has posted his weekly Saturday Night Genealogical Fun challenge and I thought I might give it a go. The challenge is to give three responses to the following statements: * Three genealogical libraries I frequent True confessions: I don't get out much. Seriously. Between looking for full-time employment and running various blogs like GeneaBloggers , as well as working on genealogy presentations to give over the next few months, I am not left with much

Summer Tripping - (USA)
One of the best things about the summer is taking a trip somewhere -- anywhere -- and seeing a little bit more of the world. When I was a kid we never left the state but we did get to some cool parts of it. Trips are not always taken just to alleviate summer boredom however, and there are several recent road (and boat and train) trip titles that I've enjoyed. If you can't get away from home, at the very least you can hang out in the lawn chair with a tall glass of sweet tea, some snacks and read

Using Vital Records For Family Trees - (USA)
Starting in the early 1900s, vital records were kept to keep track of new births, deaths, marriages and divorces. If you’re working on your family tree project, then you may wish to include copies of these files with all your paperwork. Some people like to buy a scrapbook or a chest, in which to keep every possible record of family histories they can, while others prefer to create a simplified chart. In addition to the federal census records, these vital statistics will help you finish your proj

On the Genealogy of Moralism - (USA)
Once upon a time, the left (or most of it) thought they had history all figured out: they could interpret day-to-day politics in light of the tectonic shifts in social formations, and they had an endpoint to aim at, a model of an alternative, noncapitalist economic system. For some, this became an excuse for amoralism, the notion that the glorious revolutionary ends justified actions that would be morally repugnant by any other yardstick. The intellectual reflections of this amoralism, the wri

Wisdom from the wide, weird world of the emergency room… - (USA)
Friendly advice from the emergency room Years of working in an emergency room have given me a lot of ‘worldly wisdom’. I was reviewing some of this in my mind just the other day, and it occurred to me that it would be wrong to hoard all of this myself. Everyone needs access to these little pearls, these ‘Hippocratic Aphorisms’, if only to avoid future embarrassment. So here are a few ‘Emergency Proverbs’, to make all of my readers wiser in the coming year. 1) D

I am a Pilgrim Descendant - Happy Thanksgiving to all who celebrate tomorrow - (USA)
I had a very special experience this week, preparing for Thanksgiving. A few years ago, my Dad reached an amazing discovery as he was working on our genealogy. He found the documents and proof through a distant relative that he met online that we are able to prove our Mayflower connection in our bloodline. We are descended from James Chilton, who got all the way to Plymouth, MA and then died on the ship before they got off. His young daughter carried on the bloodline. My father went through

Pilgrim Ancestors, by Michael John Neill - (USA)
My family never passed down any stories of Pilgrim forebears. Since 75 percent of my ancestors were mid-nineteenth-century immigrants, it’s not surprising. I never even gave any serious thought to having ancestors on the Mayflower. My genealogy research was not started out of any desire to have “famous” or “first” relatives, and in most cases I had difficulty getting back to the 1700s in my American lines much less the 1620s. Regular readers of my columns may recall I have one set of great-gre

Iran: A People Interrupted, Hamid Dabashi - (USA)
When I was in high school, and my mum was getting her master’s degree in pastoral theology, she used to read us excerpts from her textbooks. Sometimes these were interesting, like about Jesus’s genealogy in the Gospel of Matthew and how it’s implying that Mary was sexually suspect. But mostly she was reading bits aloud to us as an illustration of theologians’ complete inability to express themselves clearly. I have no patience with writers who can’t make a sensible sentence – read C.S. Lewis,

Research Roadblock: Names - (USA)
Do all genealogists encounter roadblocks like this? The topic for the 22 nd edition of the Carnival of Central and Eastern European Genealogy is roadblocks and breakthroughs. I like the using the term “roadblock” for those genealogy research problems rather than the term “brickwall” because a roadblock seems more like an obstacle I can “get around” or overcome. We can always detour our way around a roadblock; knocking down a brickwall is possible, but it requires some heavy duty equipment.
