Joel Klein gets mixed reviews down-under - (USA)
The Australian media continue their refreshingly skeptical coverage of Joel Klein’s promotion of his educational policies during his visit down-under. Expose bad schools, says US educator (Sydney Morning Herald) The Education Minister, Julia Gillard, is pushing for states and territories to adopt a similar system of transparency in Australia. On Monday she softened the blow for disadvantaged schools by announcing $500 million in funding to help them to entice good teachers. But the woman Mr K

Corrin in Portland, Oregon … - (USA)
Lisa Corrin, the Class of 1956 Director of the Williiams College Museum of Art came to The Portland Art Museum the evening of 30 July, 2009 (full disclosure – I am a member of that great class). The event , very well organized by Dan Root ‘87, was a reception for Ms Corrin and a talk by her: “The Art in the Williams Liberal Arts Education”. Well, who could stay away? I was one of about 10 Art History majors out of a class of 250. And we were, in those senior level classes, the private tutees

The Jiu Jitsu Theory of Education - (USA)
Image courtesy of ADD Photography Woohoo! I found it! An education system that works! As you might know, I’m a big fan of rebuilding the education system. What we have now does a dozen things reasonably well… but helping students learn isn’t one of them. Thankfully, I recently came across a model of teaching that REALLY works! My Jiu Jitsu club. I joined up at the beginning of October. And now, after two months, I figured out what they do so well. And a lot of the things could be transf

2,454 boring, unillustrated words about my PhD - (USA)
The great thing about having a blog that nobody reads is that I can write pretty much for myself. And as I need to start splurging and archiving and generally find out what I think for my PhD, I may as well attempt to do it publicly here. To start, then, with why I'm doing it in the first place – a question I don't ever stop asking myself, but rarely try to answer. 1: Architecture is more about the book than the building So why do a PhD at all? Firstly, I'm academically minded and as such, wa

Top 10 Day Trips From Los Angeles - (USA)
As the second-largest city in the country, Los Angeles is full of things to do. But for those days when a Los Angeleno needs a break from the hustle and bustle of this city of 9,800,000, there are plenty of intriguing places to visit just a few hours away from the City of Angels, ranging from the energetic adventure to the more relaxing break. The Joys of Cyclo Tourism - (USA)
Cyclo tourism is a hobby that combines tourism and cyclism and is practiced by the cyclo-tourist. The activity consists of discovering new sites, landscapes and places or to visit lands and countries using the bicycle as a means of transportation. Cyclo tourism is not to be confused with long distance sporting racing events such as the Tour de France, it is first and above all a leisure activity, the extra exercise is an added bonus but not the main and only objective of cyclo-tourism. It is how

Flarf Time - (USA)
Nada Gordon posted a rebuttal to my comments about flarf here yesterday. I thought it would be useful to respond point by point (and include some of the obnoxious comments in her comments stream). Have I engaged in a "prolonged investigation" of flarf? If I thought that flarf merited a prolonged investigation, I would give it one. Nevertheless, I have to be forthright and admit that I have not. No excuses. Nada says that flarf, for her, is "about kicks." Then why bother to spend 1000 words de

A Visit to Falling Water - (USA)
Part of this weekend's whirlwind trip so far included a trip to Fallingwater, perhaps one of Frank Lloyd Wright's most famous homes that he designed for the wealthy Kaufman family of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The house is amazing in many ways and the uniqueness of the design and the way in which the home is incorporated into the rock out cropping and waterfall is remarkable. I was fascinated both by the house itself and Wright's design. I was also intrigued by the Kaufman's son, Edgar J.

Fate of The Lovely Mural on Dickson comes into question - (USA)
With construction set to begin later this month on the new parking deck at the Washington County Courthouse, questions are now being raised as to what may become of one beloved piece of public art currently on display in Fayetteville. In 1999, “The Lovely Mural” was dedicated on the east side of the parking lot of what was then the Fayetteville Public Library. The 15-by-25 foot scene “depicts the history of Washington County through the representation of a diverse group of people who helped sh

Happy Thanksgiving, Denver! - (USA)
In the spirit of the day, and in honor of Denver turning 150 years old this month, I'm thankful that I live in the city of Denver and that Denver is such a great city in which to live. I'm thankful that Denver is an optimistic, progressive city. Whether it is due to our perpetually sunny skies and gorgeous mountain backdrop, or our inferiority complex about not being good enough of a city (probably a combination of both), Denver constantly strives to become a better place. We've been blessed wi

William Bouguereau (1825-1905) - (USA)

No matter how many other things I have in my life, ifI cannot give myself to my dear painting I am miserable.” –William Bouguereau “One has to seek Beauty and Truth, Sir! As I always say

Governors Island: For the “Benefit and Accommodation” of New Yorkers - (USA)
A few years ago, Governors Island was a kind of mysterious off-limits outpost off the tip of Manhattan. I remember when I was still new to New York looking out from the Manhattan Bridge and seeing this landmass and wondering if I was looking at Staten Island, Brooklyn, or New Jersey. That mystery began to fade once it became a part of New York City in 2003, the most recent passing-of-hands the island has experienced. The first passage of “ownership” of the island happened in 1637 when the
