Health Care Complete Archives - (USA)
Center for American ProgressHealth CareThe following compendium of articles is one I came across while trying to understand all aspects of the current healthcare issue. I found this to be a pretty good source of reference of information and so I have placed it out here on the blog for others to benefit from. It may not fall on everyone’s side of the political divide…Jim O’ A Close Look at Health CareThese issue briefs from CAP’s health experts can help you better understand some of the key conc

The Curious Case of Matt Harrington - (USA)
A brilliant reader mentioned, in reference to agents and the A-Rod case, the tale of Matt Harrington. This immediately made me go back into the archives … and find this story I wrote in The Kansas City Star about Harrington back in 2006. Consider a baseball fable. Once upon a time, there lived a boy named Matt Harrington, who could throw a baseball 95 mph. Some baseball talent scouts pointed their radar guns at him and calculated that he threw 96 or 97 mph, and a couple registered his fa

Fix Css - (USA)
August 8th, 2009 Fix CssI have a couple of HTML pages which I need to get fixed (see in the attachement). These pages have widgets and drag-n-drop functionality built in. However, when you start dragging a widget, it immediately appears far off its original position. This obviously is a CSS problem and presumably can be fixed by eliminating the right “position:relative” attribute in one of the CSS files. The requirement is that the layout of a page should stay intact (same sizes, padding, etc

Junta Joke - (USA)
Didja hear the one about the Burmese yukmeister? If you didn’t, you’ll have to wait 59 years to hear it. A court inside Myanmar’s notorious Insein prison sentenced a comedian who has criticized the government’s cyclone response to 14 more years Thursday, bringing his total prison term to 59 years, his lawyer said. Comedian and activist Zarganar was given a 45-year prison sentence last week after he was convicted on charges related to interviews he gave to foreign media outlets. In the interv

THE BIG THREE: Mike Hallowell - (USA)
A FEW WEEKS AGO WE ASKED VARIOUS BLOGGO REGULARS TO TELL US WHAT WERE THEIR TOP THREE FAVOURITE MYSTERY ANIMALS... AND WHY Mike Hallowell: I've always been a romantic at heart. Indeed, I have vague recollections of trying to snog Toby the CFZ dog at a Weird Weekend party after I'd imbibed a surfeit of tequila, and still have the scars to prove it. Toby rebuffed my advances, although he did send me a get-well card when I was discharged from the Accident & Emergency Unit lat

Shi'a Hizbullah working with Sunn'i Hamas.. - (USA)
Shia Hizballah cooperating with Sunni Hamas? Couldn't possibly be right, could it? After all, Shia and Sunni terrorists will never cooperate in any meaningful way, right? From the Jerusalem Post: Fearing a harsh military response if it attacks Israel directly, Hizbullah has paid Palestinian terrorist cells to avenge the assassination of the group's military commander, The Jerusalem Post has learned. Hizbullah, Israeli officials told the Post, has paid tens of thousands of dollars to Palesti

ONE TIME ONLY - (USA)
Visit TheaterHopper.com and access our archives for more movie comic mayhem! Apologies for the cut and paste job on today’s comic. But to be completely truthful, I spent most of the day in front of my computer writing my final paper for my Master’s research class. In fact, I took the day off from work to do it. By the time I was supposed to start working on the comic, I had a little trouble with the thought of sitting there for too much longer. I don’t know how that’s any different

Civil War soldier's grave finally gets its headstone - (USA)
For 94 years, Thomas Rowe's grave was unmarked... This year’s Memorial Day has taken on a new meaning for Racine resident Jeff Alderson. Between 11 a.m. and noon, at Yorkville Cemetery, he and several other Civil War reenactors will conduct a small service to dedicate a newly placed headstone over the grave of civil war veteran Thomas J. Rowe. Rowe’s grave has gone unmarked most likely since his death in 1915. “I found a reference to Thomas being buried at Yorkville at the Racine County H

Infrastructure, Infra dig - (USA)
Yesterday I attended the first meeting of the new JISC Resource Discovery Infrastructure Taskforce. I enjoyed the day, and the Task Group is bringing together a great set of people who all had an incredible amount to contribute to the discussion. The day was much about establishing some basics - like agreeing the Terms of Reference for the group - and also about getting some of the issues and assumptions out in the open. I'd been asked to prepare a 10 minute presentation titled 'What if we w

Curated databases and data curation - (USA)
I've been working on an article with a colleague, and came across something that's interesting, and that you might be able to help us with. There does appear to be a distinction between the way curation is used in the bio-sciences, and elsewhere. In particular, the term "curated database" tends to mean a manually constructed database that links literature to data, curated by experts who provide authority (eg see the Wikipedia definition of Biocurator ). The earliest mention of the term "curated

Since the topic of reviving old content was brought up earlier today (from linking to a post from the past), I thought it was only fitting to dig into the SEO archives again to harvest yet another opportunity to drive home a point. Can Editing Your Pages Produce Organic Rankings? Please note: this is a hopelessly nerdcore , navel-gazing post. Only those interested in the minutiae of online reading, writing, annotation and research should proceed. Looking for Roong Thisdara - (USA)
There have been many times, during the two and a half years I’ve been writing posts for The Archdruid Report, when I’ve found myself staring at a blank computer screen of a Wednesday morning, wondering what on Earth I can say that my readers might find even remotely interesting. Happily, such times have been scarce this November. A passing reference, in my post two weeks ago, to my dissatisfaction with a presentation on the Transition Town movement brought a flurry of comments asking me to say m
