NEW IN THE FLORIDA KEYS & KEY WEST - (USA)
FLORIDA KEYS — A new artificial reef is open to sport divers and anglers following the May 27 scuttling of a 523-foot-long former U.S. Air Force missile-tracking ship. The Gen. Hoyt S. Vandenberg, the second-largest vessel in the world ever purposely sunk to become an artificial reef, now lies about seven miles south of Key West in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. The bottom of the ship’s hull rests on sand at depths that average 145 feet, but the ship is so massive the superstruc

NY’s Seaway Trail a world-class birding region - (USA)
NY’s Seaway Trail a world-class birding region August 22, 2008 by newyorkoutdoors By Mary Esch, The Eagle-Tribune link to original article Greg Lawrence crashed through the underbrush, eyes wide, binoculars swinging from his neck. “Worm-eating Warbler! Worm-eating Warbler! That’s a lifer for me,” he called to the group of birders he was leading on a woodland trek near Lake Ontario. “Wow. Whew. That made my day. I just got my bins on it before it flew away.” Lawrence, something of a birdi

Dreier-Offerman Park - (USA)
On Saturday I cycled to Dreier-Offerman Park and spent several hours birding the grassland and surrounding area. An early surprise (at least for me) was finding a Horned Lark feeding at the edge of one of the parking lots. During the course of the morning there were several flyovers of American Pipits. I observed two pipits feeding in the grass at one soccer field, but a flock of about 60 touched down very briefly. There were lots of sparrows around, the highlight being a Vesper Sparrow. Like ev

Birding Binoculars - Which are Best? - (USA)
In: Recreation & Sports 20Jun2009 by Donna P. BesskenWith good binoculars you feel like you are looking with your own eyes only the view is closer, magnified and clear. How big do you want that image to be? Well, that will depend on many things. How heavy will the binoculars be with extra magnification? Can you hold the binoculars steady if they are magnified more than 10 times (10x)? I find it hard to hold 12x steady for any length of time without support. But I have small hands and that mak

NYC Parks Are Free and have other free things - (USA)
Despite gusty winds,  yesterday was a beautiful day.  Still, a bunch of us Mainers and a handful of Arkansans/Arkansanites/Arkansanivians  expressed guarded optimism,  the memory of past teaser days lingering.  Sure, 60 and sunny in January is no cause to lift expectations.   You take it at face value, maybe get a stupid sunburn and don’t tear up in the morning when you need to put on the union suit again. But in the Northeast, when you start moving into March and April, nature needs to be caref

Ramblings - (USA)
Well its been a pretty good week for birding and other stuff. Yesterday my son's basketball team I coach won the city recreation 5-6th grade boys basketball championship! We won in overtime by 3 pts. There was so much excitement and yelling go on from the parents and coaches. The two neighborhoods were the Lincoln Park/Piedmont area vs. Morgan Park/Norton Park area. I heard several bad stuff from parents who overheard the coaches from the other team to trip my players or knock into them. I

Birdwatching Or Birding Which One Is A Hobby With A Cause? - (USA)
Birdwatching Or Birding Which One Is A Hobby With A Cause? Posted by College Pro Oct 12 Birder’s have long contested birdwatching as a hobby, by saying the two are completely different. Birdwatching  is a hobby that is done as an activity during recreation,  but birder’s are more intense  and dedicated to there cause. The Birder’s Whether it be in the United States or any where else in the world, what birder’s are saying is what they do so is far removed from…

A Trek to Bird-Watching Heaven - Malheur National Wildlife Refuge - (USA)
Photo: The beautiful Malheur Marsh Blog and Photos by Dawn Rasmussen While the weather still remained amicable, my friend Linda and I decided ditch the hustle and bustle of daily life and venture to Malheur National Wildlife Refuge in Eastern Oregon, located a mere six-hour drive from Portland. (Oregon is the seventh largest state in the Lower 48 – so it is possible to drive for hours and still be within the state boundaries.) Malheur is considered one of the top birding spots in Oregon and is

Family travel in Texas: the 50 state series - (USA)
Every Tuesday until we run out of states, I plan to post about family-friendly vacation ideas, attractions and events in each one of the US states, taking input mostly from Twitter and Facebook. Yes, I know how to search for travel ideas on a destination or attraction Web site, but a tweet or a Facebook Wall recommendation is a much more engaging and public way to spread the word. Please don’t email suggestions to me;  that’s nice but it is one-to-one communication. Tweet me and/or Faceboo

Bird Watching Tour Ethics - (USA)
I was taught by my parents that when observing wildlife one should do one’s best to avoid disturbing animals or birds.  I also learned to never actively interact with them by feeding them or making noises.  One of my best childhood memories is a hike in Grand Teton National Park with my family.  I must have been seven or eight and had raced ahead on the trail when I saw a bear.  Knowing what to do, I quietly went back up to the trail and told my family. My father found a spot for our family to

Another visit to Palo Alto Baylands - part 1 - (USA)
Early in October Red and I went to Palo Alto Baylands to see what was there and what we would find interesting enough to photograph. I found that I had so many photos to post I decided to split this trip in two parts. This will be the "scenic" part, and part 2 will be the birds we saw. One of the most common wildflowers seen around here in riparian and scrub brush areas.(Don't forget to click on the images if you want to see a larger photo.)
