Lack of Vitamin D in Children 'Shocking' - (USA)
About 70 percent of U.S. children have low levels of vitamin D, which puts them at higher risk for bone and heart disease, researchers said today. "We expected the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency would be high, but the magnitude of the problem nationwide was shocking," said Dr. Juhi Kumar of Children's Hospital at Montefiore Medical Center. Cases of rickets, a bone disease in infants caused by low vitamin D levels, have also been increasing, other research shows. The new finding, from a

Dissecting Leftism (2009-04-24 05:42) - (USA)
Another small meditation on antisemitism I can't help myself, can I? I can't leave Die Judenfrage alone. I can never quite free myself from the dangerous delusion that my goodwill towards Israel in particular and Jews generally should permit me to speak freely about why I think Jews have the horrendous problems that they do have. There has been much said about Ashkenazi IQ and I think that there is no doubt about a substantial Ashkenazi advantage in that regard. Much less noted is someth

Disadvantages of Computers in the Classroom - (USA)
To start the most significant fact that should be stated is that the computer is a tool, and as with any educational tool, from books to crayons, it can be used to enhance the curriculum and promote learning, but it can also be misused and abused. In this essay, I will discuss the disadvantages of having computers in the classrooms due to the misuse and the abuse of this tool. I found it hard to find research that had been done on this topic because not only is the research on the effective

Salfeld Child Control 2009.v10.166.0 [Direct Link] - (USA)
Computers are the place for children. This is the place where they can sharpen their agility as well as their abilities. They can learn and make new friends. What’s more, the Internet provides information for homework assignments. So far, so good. But they also need to be protected from the computer—for one thing, so that they don’t lose their sense of time and forget to go out and play with their friends once in a while, and for another, because of the dangers lurking on the Web. That’s why res

Why I Teach: Twitter Poll - (USA)
This morning, I asked my Twitter and blogging friends the simple question: Why do you teach? While most of the responses came in via Twitter (limited to 140 characters), some also came in through the comments. What I found in my nonscientific cross sampling of technolgically literate teachers was interesting. If you missed out on your chance this morning, feel free to add your own comments below! Without any further formalities, here were the responses: @flourishingkids I teach beca

Is MSN Better For Business Than Google? - (USA)
By Michael Small Google may be the most popular search engine but is it the best for driving qualified sales leads to your site? You might be surprised at the answer. Most search engine comparison tables will show you usage statistics that are something like this: 64% Google 14% Yahoo 14% MSN 08% AOL, All the Web, and all others combined Those are simple search engine usage statistics. While they might be accurate as far as how much a search engine is used there is a much bigger picture

Walmart (WMT) Takes Aim at Best Buy (BBY) with $300 Laptops for Back to School Season; Amazon.com (A - (USA)
I am coming to the conclusion that aside from supermarkets and clothing stores eventually we are just going to have Walmart ( WMT ) and Amazon.com ( AMZN ) as the 2 retailers in America. If you missed the news yesterday Amazon snapped up Zappos .com. Shoes was the one area Amazon was trying very hard in and was not winning, so it did the Cisco ( CSCO ) strategy - if you can't compete, just buy. Kooky USB Drives – Review & Giveaway - (USA)
Computers are used in a teen’s everyday life. Homework, social networking, playing games, etc. I’m old enough that I remember using floppy disks in Jr. High and some of High School to store files and transfer them from my home computer to one at school. Then in college, I invested in a USB drive. It made transferring files, easier, the storage capacity was unreal, and it was smaller and easier to carry than a floppy. Kooky USB Drives, which are made by Emtec, are based off the Kooky Klicker

Peggy Sheehy on Education in Second Life & Ramapo Islands - (USA)

I remember teaching ‘internet for teachers: the basics’ with a friend of mine during lunch break, covering exciting missions such as there are ‘how do I create an email account’, ‘how do I check my email’ and ‘how do I s

In particular, parents say cell phones allow their families to stay more regularly in touch. And many parents say they are now using the Internet to view material online together. Are you using technology to its best advantage? Before
