Interview with J.A. Henderson - (USA)
Jan-Andrew Henderson has just won the Royal Mail Award for his novel Bunker 10. This award is the largest children’s book prize in the UK and more importantly is voted for by children themselves. Since I am such a such a huge fan of his books (see my reviews of both Bunker 10 and Crash) and since he is a local talent, living in Edinburgh and I could quite easily go round and beat him up if he refused, J.A. Henderson had little choice but to agree to answer a few wee questions I sent him. Here

Cartoon Network: Now With “Reality!” - (USA)
The Cartoon Network now has reality television. Actually, they have decided to include reality programming since March of 2009 . Yet, with the Cartoon Network turning to “reality,” is nothing sacred on television? The Cartoon Network having reality television is equivalent to Ralphie, in A Christmas Story, finding out his decoder ring is merely a tool for selling Ovaltine; a perversion of things we thought were absolute. Question is, how did it come to this? Reality has slowly contaminat

Kids and Jobs: What Age Is Too Young? - (USA)
Kids and Jobs: What Age Is Too Young? by Suzy PetersonMany kids think about making money and perhaps getting a job around the age of 15 or 16. This is because they need money to spend with their friends, money for dating, and they might need money for gas when they become old enough to drive. That age is also the age that some employers will take a chance and hire for minimum wage jobs that teens can do. What does a younger teen do though, if they want a job? This may not necessarily be

Teens, Boundaries and Trust - (USA)
Rabbi Horowitz's column in this week's Jewish Press* addresses a problem that many parents of teens have -- balancing the want (and need) of kids to "do something" on a long winter Saturday night against the need of the parents to make sure that their kids are in a wholesome environment. He makes one recommendation that parents take the proactive step of organizing an activity for their kids, such as an organized athletic league. Depending on where you live, you may find such programs already e

Aspen, CO Night life - (USA)
This text was written by: Albania Flights Finding things to do in Aspen during the day isn’t difficult – get out on the slopes and ski or enjoy one of the other winter sports that you love. At night, however, Aspen really comes to life with Aspen Nite life! No matter how old or young you are, there is something to do in Aspen twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. Music and dancing are the biggest Aspen Nite life attractions, but there is more to do than just that – so if you aren’t qu

John Hughes Passes: Will Be Remembered By Many As Giving 80’s Teens A Reason To Live, Laugh And Love - (USA)
Hughes gave us so many wonderful movies, and lots of good times! Sweet memories! With his passing I sat and reminisced on some of the great classics he gave me, okay us, and I wanted to share a few with my favorite funkenbabies. Hell I was a pre-teen/teen when some of these cult classics came out, and Friday nights where filled with, a group of giggling gals, sleeping bags, pop corn and a John Hughes movie. Everyone went wild over Duckie, drooled over Jake and envied Samantha. It would take me

Beyond 'Birds and Bees' - (USA)
Earlier this year, in Parts 1 and 2 of this series, we looked at urban teenagers' attitudes about sex, and their behaviors and practices that reflect those attitudes. Part 2 ended with a question about how parents and churches can fill the gap in teens' knowledge about sexual health issues and thereby prompt a change in their behavior. We now tackle that tricky subject. There's good news and bad news about what inner-city teens seem to know about sex. The good news is that parents

Grand Rounds, Vol. 5.47 - Cost Containment In Healthcare - (USA)
Critics of the Obama health (insurance) reform plan have been formally served notice that they are under observation, and should they be caught making obvious errors in describing the proposed plan - or worse, they are detected emanating piscatorial odors - they are likely to be reported directly to certain concerned individuals at the White House (Hi, Linda!), who will take steps to correct such wrong-thinking. So, as he embarks on this week’s edition of Grand Rounds, DrRich would like to welco

M.T. Anderson Defends Teen Intelligence - (USA)
Today’s Washington Post has a wonderful profile of YA author M.T. Anderson. As I was reading the article I found myself (mentally) cheering, “Hoo-rah!”. “It’s insulting to believe that teens should have a different kind of book than an adult should,” says the author of “Feed” and, most recently, “The Astonishing Life of Octavian Nothing, Traitor to the Nation.” Teens like challenges, he says. They know the world is complicated, and “they can tell when a book is simplifying life.” Thank you, M

If you somehow had the chance, would you do your life over? Thirtysomething Mike O’Donnell (Matthew Perry) would. Then one mysteriously magical moment, Mike gets his chance. He’s suddenly back at Hayden High where he’s the star of the basketball team, a total hottie, and a classmate to his own teenage kids…which gives Mike ( Zac Efron ) a chance to go from not-so-good dad to really cool friend. That’s the premise of this sort of teenage comedy movie which Warner Brothers Home Video is

Uncovering the truth behind “50% of teens post senstive information” - (USA)
Last week we saw a plethora of New Zealand headlines bemoaning the poor behaviour of ‘kids today’ – this time in how they handle their sensitive information online. The punchline was that one in two students had posted sensitive information about themselves online in the past year. TVNZ went with Half of NZ teens post sensitive info online while NZHerald went with Nearly half of Kiwi teens post sensitive info online – both remarkably similar to the original press release. Some wen

Fandom, conventions & etc. - (USA)
Not actually being at Worldcon has given me a fair amount of time to think about being at Worldcon, especially as it regards old fen and the recruitment of new fen. I attended my first real science fiction convention at the tender age of 13. It certainly was a different era, as we rarely see children of that age unaccompanied by supervisory adults, let alone taking multiple forms of public transit and checking into a hotel room under their own name. All of which I did in order to get to

Sue Scheff: My Story of a Struggling Teen - (USA)
On this Mother’s Day - I am re-printing my experiences almost a decade ago. I wrote my story and published my book in hopes of helping other families that are struggling with their teens today. There is hope, you are not alone. Happily I can say my organization that was developed from this experience, Parents Universal Resource Experts , (P.U.R.E.) has grown tremendously - we have literally helped over 20,000 families in the past 9+ years! Many parents ask how my daughter is doing - she

Dying Man’s Daily Journal – Inspirational young Lady - (USA)
Have you ever read or heard a story, that just touched your heart. Made you just sit back in awe, full of admiration at the inspirational story of another. Talking to Your Teen about Health - (USA)
Your teen or tween may not have the perspective yet to recognize what they need to do or not to to get healthy and/or avoid falling into unhealthy habits. As a caring, involved parent, you want to provide guidance, but you don’t know what to say or how to get him or her to listen. Your child is probably listening to you less and less as he or she is turning more to the guidance of peers. Luckily, modeling has been shown to be a very powerful way of shaping your child’s behavior. They will do w

In which the latest instance of whitewashing book covers produces pondering. - (USA)
Justine Larbalestier has written several books. I have seen all of them at my local B&N where I spend most of my free time. Considering the fact that until just a few weeks ago, books with any kind of POC on the cover in the YA section were rarer than 10 carat diamond chunks, I didn’t get around to picking her books up. After all according to the covers, they were just another set of stories featuring white teens getting to do fun things or experience life in many and diverse ways, right? Pl
