May 4th/5th new releases of childrens and YA fantasy/sci fi - (USA)
Here are the new releases for May 4th and 5th. I continue to be stunned that so many of the books being published are science fiction or fantasy, mainly the latter (and if you want to see for yourself, the list from which I draw my own can be found here, at Teens Read Too ). I asked a little while ago if these lists were being enjoyed, and it seemed they were. But one faithful reader, my sister, has let me know she finds them boring, and that she prefers blogs that act as filters, recommending

Metro, Teens, Rhee, and Me - (USA)
There's really nothing more entertaining in the world than sitting behind teenage girls on the Metro. At least, so long as they're talking, as opposed to giggling. Giggling teenage girls are a plague. You think you've escaped it once you graduate high school, but what you don't realize is that there will always be giggling teenage girls. (And I don't necessarily mean giggling at you, either, just giggling in general. Because apparently, when you're a teenage girl, there's very little in life tha

State Birding Contest Draws Flock of Young Birders - (USA)
Georgia’s 24-hour Youth Birding Competition had a record crowd of children and teens looking and listening statewide for birds common and rare this weekend. The results: more than 200 species seen or heard, more than $1,200 raised for conservation and about 140 young birders ages 4 to 18 better versed in the state’s diverse bird life. The turnout marked a new high for the annual competition, in its fourth year. The 2008 event fielded 126 participants. Coordinator Tim Keyes, a Georgia Wildlife

What's Becoming of Our Book Culture? ... at CityLit - (USA)
I'm finally getting around to posting about the CityLit Festival in Baltimore on April 18th. The event had over 3,000 attendees and 60 exhibitors, according to their website . I had an absolutely wonderful time ... hence my difficulty in recapping it for you - there is just so much to say! Today I'm going to share my experiences at the panel entitled "What's Becoming of Our Book Culture?" According to the program of events, this is: A panel discussion moderated by Dave Rosenthal , the

A Special Guest Review: "The Missing Link: FOUND" - (USA)
One of my favorite things about homeschooling is the ability to utilize skills in context. So often, in classrooms, things are contrived. I offer up exhibit A: play money. Personally, I've never owned any of those faux "math manipulatives." I taught my kids how to count using (gasp!) real money. If we were in a pinch (because I frankly don't have any $100 bills just warming the kitchen counter), I nabbed a few pieces of Monopoly money and kept going. After the child seemed to have a decent enou

Hangover Theater Guide to the 12 Days of Christmas - (USA)
Gazing out upon the vast tapestry of Pajiban creeds and customs, I am certain that this time of year is feted is various ways. Whether you cherish Hannukah, Christmas, Ramadan, Yule, Kwanzaa, Decemberween or -- as my Jehovah's Witness friends call it -- Thursday, the holidays are about one thing: spending time with loved ones. This is usually accomplished in about 14 minutes. Then the rest of the time is spent caustically avoiding speaking to one another, drinking copious amounts of liquored n

Moms with older kids plan to spend less than those with little ones American mothers have confirmed in a recent study what retailers are fearing: they plan to spend less money on holiday presents this year. In the new report from the Marketing to Moms Coalition, a not-for-profit industry association that studies the habits and purchasing patterns of mothers, women with children plan to spend $50 less than last year, for a total of $660 in predicted holiday spending for 2008. Let’sGetHonestBlog I’ve been researching a few research grants today, balancing things like Abstinence Education and Community Based Abstinence-Education grants with Medical research on Male Contraception (guess which funding won out??) (Actually both types got the grants,so I suppose the winners are, however, those grants benefitted — or will — and the losers are the taxpayers — if they didn’t. For example, based on several factors, I’d say the Abstinence Education is a bust. Not that I’m ant

Winter Blog Blast Tour: Susan Kuklin November 17, 2008 - (USA)
Susan Kuklin is an author and photographer of a number of non-fiction books for children and teens. Her most recent book is No Choirboy: Murder, Violence, and Teenagers on Death Row. It’s a powerful and provocative (in a good way) book, tackles a subject that might be considered just as edgy as some of her other books, and it’s reflective of her usual method of writing. As Susan says on her website, “The modus operandi is a book version of cinema verite; that is, choose a subject, find a situati

Quel che lascia sgomenti è che qualcuno abbia prodotto una cosa del genere. We went to the ROM yesterday, mainly to see the Egyptian Book of the Dead , as the exhibit ends May 10 and I'm away next week. The Royal Ontario Museum is a wonderful natural-history and world-heritage museum, and all the exhibits are very well done. But admission prices are so high as to make it inaccessible to great numbers of people. Twenty-two dollars for adults, $19 for teens and $15 for kids must be completely out of the question for most families. I know kids go on school trips, bu

Kidz Book Buzz Blog Tour: Savvy (Interview with Ingrid Law) - (USA)
What fiction most influenced your childhood, and what effect did those stories have on your writing? I loved books about magic, or books with a sense of wonder or adventure. Diana Wynne Jones was one of my favorite authors. I loved the Anne of Green Gables books as well. Arthurian legends, the Lord of the Rings, the Chronicles of Prydain, books about spies... I loved them all. I also enjoyed science fiction as well, but more so later, in my teens. I think I enjoyed anything that showed me new

Posted by Huston on November 17, 2008 Friday was productive. I didn’t plan anything special, but by about the middle of the day, I realized that it was a really good one. After a simple error identification and correction exercise on the projector for a warm up (courtesy of Yahoo!), most of my classes were studying Oedipus Rex, which I’d perform aloud as they read along and stop two or three times per page to summarize in my joking, pop-culture heavy style (”So Oedipus is getting all paranoid
