I’m playing catch-up today - (USA)
With Mom in the hospital, doing fairly well, and my two sisters visiting her today, I stayed home to get caught up. I had a table full of dirty dishes, tomatoes that needed planting in their Wall’o Waters, two roses and a tub peach, plus some perennials that sadly needed planting. So to keep busy and keep my mind off Mom’s problem, I started in this morning doing “normal” things. It eases my worries like nothing else does. By noon, I’d planted six tomatoes, the roses, perennials and even som

Preserving Summer’s Very Best - (USA)
Every July, I go to the farmer’s market to buy enough summer berries to make my famous mixed berry preserves. I was given a recipe by Mr. CG’s grandmother years ago for refrigerator preserves. I tweaked her recipe by adding my own special ingredient, and then learned how to can it four years ago. Now we enjoy mixed berry summer preserves even on the coldest wintery day. I promise you, when you make these at home, these will be the best summer berry preserves you have ever tasted. EVER.

Half-Local: Penne With Chicken, Asparagus, Mushrooms and Fresh Chevre - (USA)
It isn’t so hard to eat locally during the winter, that is, if you plan ahead and put food by while it is in season. Canning tomatoes, making jellies, jams and preserves, freezing marinara sauce, pesto and making and canning salsa, and drying and freezing herbs all help families eat the bounty of a local summer while the winter winds blow. Root cellaring, which has become popular again, allows us to eat local potatoes, onions, garlic, squash, pumpkins, turnips, apples and other root vegetables a

Holiday Gifts: 10 Frugal and Homemade Gift Ideas - (USA)
I must admit to being a pinch of Grinch with a dash of Scrooge when it comes to holiday gifts. I’m not a huge fan of spending big bucks on Christmas presents or dishing out dollars on holiday decorations. I just don’t think busting the bank for one day makes much financial sense, especially in this economy. I do love celebrating the holidays simply though. There’s no better gift to give a friend, loved one, or neighbor than something creative, homemade, or thoughtful. To help celebrate the ho

Jams, Jellies, and Preserves - (USA)
Making homemade conserve (jam or preserves) and jellies is a rewarding hobby. Thanks to a steady decline in home-canning, items like boiling water canners and pressure canners have become obsolete in many parts of the country (well, the U.S. anyway). While that is a shame, you do not have to have a canner to make jams, jellies, and preserves! Truthfully, you really only need glass canning jars, lids, rings, tongs of some sort, pectin (sometimes you don’t even need that), a wire mesh strainer, a

Fruit and Vegetables These must be in good condition before you preserve them. So disgard anything spoilt, over-ripe or rotten. You don’t want to introduce any moulds or fungus into the product before you even start the preserving process. Beware of coatings to commercially produced fruit. Kids and Gardening: Getting Dirty Pays - (USA)
by TwoJunes I (Lisa) grew up in northwest Arkansas, just a generation or two removed from the family farm. Although it was not the primary source of income, my grandparents and parents devoted considerable land to producing food for the family table. One of my grandfathers had a “truck patch” in addition to the family garden…literally, extra produce that he sold off the back end of a truck for extra cash. My mother as well as grandmothers and aunts on both sides of the family were grea

So, I sez to myself, "Self, what is this the summer of? Is it the summer of my herbs? No, that was last summer. Is it the summer of my cleaning out the garage? No, that lasted about 5 minutes two summers ago. Oh, wait, I remember this is the summer of my organizing. Which is coming along swimmingly. That is, if you swim like I do, with lots of floundering and sputtering and barely keeping my head above water. Though I do have one bookcase that simply looks amazing, don't worry I've taken picture

Barbecue…with a side of humble pie - (USA)
(Guest post by The Boyfriend) On his old Emeril Live show on Food Network, Emeril Lagasse quipped regularly that he wished that someone had invented “smellavision”. As the audience ooooh-ed and aaaaah-ed over whatever he was cooking, he would lament that video images couldn’t capture the magical aromas and tastes that he was creating. I know what he meant. Sometimes, visual images are so inadequate…inadequate to the point of actually insulting their subjects. Ever visit the Grand Can

My mother’s quince jelly - (USA)
In response to Homepaddock , and for my mother. A few weeks ago, the children in my Misses Seven’s class were learning ‘qu’ words. Queen, quoll, quiet, quince. “Quince,” said the children. “What’s a quince?” So I found some quinces in the Adelaide Central Markets, and took them into school so the children could see what a quince looks like. But afterwards, what to do with three beautiful quinces? Make jelly, of course. In past years, I have often had jars of quince jelly in

The Truth Behind Fruit Spreads, Jams and Jellies - (USA)
I 'm often asked what the difference is between fruit spreads. What makes a jelly a jelly and not a jam? Is a preserve the same thing as a fruit butter? Here is a quick guide to fruit spreads to make your shopping easier and hopefully inspire you to make one at home. Jelly: The Royal Queen of Spreads. Jellies should be clear and firm. The most difficult and time consuming of all fruit spreads, their delicate nature makes them a special treat. Jams: The Children's Favorite. Jams are t
