RememBear This: Nissin Top Ramen - (USA)
Alright, well we’ve all heard the endless jokes about Top Ramen being the diet of college students but I think those jokes are so prevalent because it’s got a lot of truth to it.  I bet a bunch of you ate a good deal of these block o’ noodles (smoodles?!?) in your freshman/sophomore  years.  You really can’t get anything more filling for less money.   Seriously, what other “meal” can you get for $0.19 ? I think it’s entirely possible that instant noodles have saved more lives than penicillin

THE QUEEN'S MEME:COOKING WITH THYME - (USA)
The Cooking Meme (What Is The Meaning of Thyme and Other Deep Questions) 1. If you could put thyme in a bottle, what is the first thing that you'd like to do? The Great Wizard warneth me that an untested maiden dost not and shouldst not toucheth any bottle that containeth thyme! The Great Wizard speaketh, "Thyme, as an herb, possesseseth the magical properties of causing positive vibration betweenst two spirits, and the energy createth by the herb, when properly charged, le

Last night in Paris, sadly - (USA)
Our suitcases are all packed and we've got a taxi booked for early tomorrow morning. It'll be sad when we close the door of the apartment for the last time.Last night we found a fondue restaurant near Notre Dame de Paris, it was fantastic! All-you-can-eat fries, salad and all you can drink wine with the beef fondue!!! I don't drink much, had about half a glass, but my sister sure enjoyed!!Today was my cooking class and it was definitely one of the big highlights! There were 4 other people (3

Three Awards, A Meme, And A Fondue - (USA)
[I usually put this at the end of these things, but this is a long one and some of you might not get there before you curse me out and leave. I truly and sincerely appreciate it when someone thinks enough of me to give me an award. Most of the insults herein are in jest - yes, even the ones concerning Eddie Bluelights. I will proudly display these awards with all of the others I have been given, proving once again that I'm a hypocrite and my ego is absolutely insatiable. And that's enough of tha

Best cookbook gifts of 2008 - (USA)
To give a cookbook as a gift is an act of nourishment. You hope that your offering will inspire and ultimately feed the recipient. You hope he/she will think of you while standing in the kitchen, excited and covered in flour. Perhaps the year’s best cookbook, or at least the most lavish, isn’t nourishing to anything but your brain and fantasy life. A Day at elBulli: An Insight into the Ideas, Methods and Creativity of Ferran Adria (Phaidon Press Inc., $49.95) is less a cookbook than an act of

Entertaining Food - (USA)
We took the kids to the local Japanese steak house for dinner last night. I was a little worried about burnt fingers since they cook the food right in front of you – but it was all good. The chef was very entertaining. And while Maggie did hold her hands over her ears while he was banging throwing the knives around, all of the kids definitely enjoyed themselves. They were transfixed the entire time he was cooking. He made lots of fire (a little scary, but cool), and a volcano, and other fu

Awards and Meme - (USA)
I must say I am a bit behind in the Award Department. It seems once the school year started I have been running in all directions. So I am pulling these awards out of the closet that I was selfishly keeping to myself and now I am going public with my fellow blogger's generosity. The Brilliante WebBlog Award comes to me from Alexa at Artsy-Foodie and Mari at Once Upon a plate. I have had the privilege of adopting Alexa in the last round of Adopt-A-Blogger and I have enjoyed getting to know h

100 Ways To Eat More Fat - (USA)
Yes, you read that right. I said 100 Ways to Eat More Fat — not less. The longer I study food and the history of cuisine, the more firmly I believe that this idea of eating low fat is complete and total fallacy. How long have humans been eating? Oh, around 2.5 million years or so. And how long have we been eating “low fat”? Less than 50 years. (Source: How the Ideology of Low Fat Conquered America ) With this in mind, I’ve comprised a list of traditional dishes that celebrate and embrac

Darwin: Domestic Goddess Part 15 - (USA)
It's really cold. Sometimes when I'm cold I turn to the comfort of a hot chocolate. But no, this time the temperature was such that something more drastic was required. I decided to have a Chocolate Fondue party at the flat.Yes really.Whilst chocolate fondue is easy to the point of me feeling guilty about labeling this post under the 'cooking' category, it's still edible and it's still food so...fuck it.Melt chocolate in bowl suspended over barely simmering water. Perfectly Sunny Day - (USA)
Today we had our solar cooker competition at school.  It was fantastic, and even the weather cooperated!  I was so proud of my students and how well built their solar cookers were.  They were also so creative!  The menu items were amazing, and the only ones that didn’t really cooperate were the cookies, but I suspect if we left them out until around 5 intead of 1, they would have cooked through. It was an exciting day that started with setting up the solar cookers in the morning.  Througho

Summer cooking camps for kids - (USA)
PREP caters to kids in Seal Beach Lately, my daughter Hannah, who just turned 9, has been inspired to learn how to cook. She made her first batch of “gourmet” Mac ‘N Cheese the other day — and it was pretty darn good. She used four different cheeses and bacon! Like a good chef-in-training, she even added a “secret” ingredient — and refused to tell anyone what it was. While I can help her a bit around the kitchen, I am not a cook. I am much better suited ordering food than making it.
