The corrupting pressures of politics and profit in Health Care - (USA)
I thought I’d take a crack at the full context of this, using a contributor to That Other Blog posting under the moniker of ‘Jules’. Italicized text is verbatim “what I object to” statements. Quoted source: OpenCongress helps you track all the actions by your elected officials and what people are saying about them. Putting the entire post under the fold, because it really is very long and in my humble (ha!) opinion should be read all the way through. Sec. 123, pg. 30: A government

The Trouble with Mary Robinson - (USA)
President Obama’s awarding of a Presidential Medal of Freedom to former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Mary Robinson has sparked widespread criticism. Commentators have pointed to Robinson’s role in the infamous 2001 Durban “anti-racism” conference and, more generally, to what UN Watch has

Why does the Liberal OC’s Chris Prevatt keep defending Republicans and attacking Democrats? - (USA)
A week ago our blogger Sean Mill broke the story that the restaurant owned by Supervisor Janet Nguyen’s husband, Tom Bonikowski-Nugyen, and her Chief of Staff, Andrew Do, had once again been issued several Orange County Health violations, including two major violations. We are still waiting for the blue hacks at the Liberal OC to even mention to their readers that Nguyen voted against restaurant health ratings and of course it comes as no surprise that they are not going to let their readers k

“I AM AN AMERICAN CONSERVATIVE SHITHEEL” - (USA)
This is awesome , crappy grammar and all. I AM AN AMERICAN CONSERVATIVE SHITHEEL This morning I was awoken by my alarm clock powered by electricity generated by the public power monopoly regulated by the US department of energy. I then took a shower in the clean water provided by the municipal water utility. After that, I turned on the TV to one of the FCC regulated channels to see what the national weather service of the national oceanographic and atmospheric administration determined the

The nightmare of GM foods - (USA)
Despite that groovy little garden planted by Michelle Obama right behind the White House, this president’s food policy is not so green, since Tom Vilsack, his Agriculture Secretary, supports the use of GM foods, as, certainly, do those Monsanto veterans whom Obama has now also brought on board. Let’s make sure the administration knows we won’t put up with it, as there’s already solid evidence that GM foods are poison (literally and economically). MCM The Nightmare of GM Foods “You have t

FDA sets ’safe’ levels for melamine in baby formula - (USA)
NN) — After first saying that they could not determine a threshold for the safe amount of certain toxic chemicals in infant formula, Food and Drug Administration officials said Friday that trace amounts are safe. “Amounts of the industrial chemical melamine or the melamine-like compound called cyanuric acid that are below 1.0 ppm [1,000 parts per billion] do not raise public health concerns,” said Stephen Sundlof, the FDA’s director of the Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition. Obama's New Mexico townhall: "No more fine print" -- full text - (USA)
President Obama held another of his favorite townhall meetings today, this one in a New Mexico high school, where he typically opens with an educational sales pitch on his stimulus plan and budget, the need for health care reforms this year and, by Memorial Day, he says, credit card reforms to eliminate abuses by card companies. Then, he takes audience questions, boy-girl, around the hall, taking every opportunity to sell his plans and ideas and, today, to claim he's actually invited Republica

***BEAKING NEWS*** - (USA)
This just in from an e-letter update from Rep. Steve Gottwalt: Dear Neighbor: This afternoon, Governor Tim Pawlenty announced there will be no special session and no government shutdown. The 2009 session will definitely end Monday night at midnight. The governor has decided to take the bills the DFL majority has put on his desk, line-item veto in some places, and sign them. The DFL bills irresponsibly leave a gap of $3 billion, and the governor is in a position to unallot to cover the gap,

The "Pro-Life" Hypocrisy - (USA)
I'm certainly not the first observer to note that for the conservative "pro-life" crowd, concern for life seems to magically end at the moment of birth. In their world, once the mother has been forced to carry the pregnancy to term, mother and child (and their family support networks) do not deserve any more consideration. Instead, according to the conservative view, they're on their own. If death results, so be it. Survival of the fittest. No more concern about ensuring that life continues.

Is PR hazardous to your health? - (USA)
Have you ever stopped to think how hazardous our occupation really is? Granted, it’s not included in this odd list I found from the Connecticut Department of Labor:  “Occupations Designated as High Risk or Safety Sensitive.”  You’ll be pleased to know that a back piler operator, bus driver, chauffer (sic), and a propane service technician are among those listed as high risk. Public relations is nowhere to be found. But if you have a lot of writing, tweeting and blogging in your day-to-day

This IS What You Get When You Stack the Court - (USA)
The founders were wary of corporate influence on politics — and their rhetoric sometimes got pretty heated. In an 1816 letter, Thomas Jefferson declared his hope to “crush in its birth the aristocracy of our moneyed corporations, which dare already to challenge our government to a trial of strength and bid defiance to the laws of our country.” This skepticism was enshrined in law in the early 20th century when the nation adopted strict rules banning corporations from contributing to polit

Workplace Safety - (USA)

"The rule, which has strong support from business groups, says that in assessing the risk from a particular substance, federal agencies should gather and analyze "industry-by-industry evidence" of employees' exposure

Food for Thought for American Conservatives - (USA)
More good content floating around the Web. This morning, @derekcbart tweeted a link to a site with the below-quoted content. I’m trying to find the source and the closest I seem to get is this post on reddit . The author of this put a lot of thought into it. Although his grammar leaves a bit to be desired, and his original title is sure to turn off anyone who actually is a conservative (which is why I edited it), he’s 100% correct in his statements. I’m reposting it here as some food f
